Wow! With yields so low from the drought (usually get 400 bales, and only 135 this year), our cost alone is $53 per bale for fertilizer, weed control, fuel, and baling cost. Thinking about sell some hay to cover the cost of liming our fields. Never would have thought it was that high. So when I hear $100 per bale, it really isn't as bad of price gouging as I thought.

That's exactly why I buy all of mine. Even with delivery costs, its way less than your $53/roll - I get to graze the cattle on the land that would otherwise be 'hayfield' all season long, and I've got no $$$ tied up in a mower/conditioner/rake/tedder/baler. And, I 'import' at least $10 of fertilizer value in each roll, as it cycles back into my soil by way of manure or waste hay incorporated into my soil.
My entire 'hay season' is pretty much one or two days - I can unload and stack the 3 or 4 semi-loads we buy, and have them covered in that time frame.
Seems like I saw university ag economists put the pencil to it several years back - if you're not running at least 600 rolls a year through it, you're losing money on your haying equipment.

your hay came in real cheap with all those expenses.1 of my friends had $85 a bale in some hay he baled.an another guy i heard about had $100 a bale in some hay he baled.ffamom":pyjc9e4u said:
