Fencing Question

Building a new barbed wire fence and I hit a spot where I'm forced to angle out about 15 degrees for a little over 200'. I have a line pot in there but it needs a dead-man. Problem is I can't put it behind the post because it's on the property line and the neighbor says she doesn't want one on her side. Will a dead-man work in front of the post?

Depends on tension times no. of wires times angle of dangle plus by a soil fudge factor... ;-)

More seriously -- spread the load between a couple posts and make sure they are wide posts. Railroad ties work well here.

Can't do that but I'm using 2 7/8 steel post in concrete. Was going to use same for dead-man.

An H post in line with the fence. Another post and brace in line with the other angle. Hence, 3 of your pipes with braces between (a double H) . That is what I would do. Center of the 3 pipes is the pivot.

This is the craziest property line I have come across. It actually has two doglegs in it. This one was just a slow curve they used T posts and cattle panels. My guy wants the property line followed but doesn't want to that V angle brace in because he doesn't like the looks of the one that's there, so my only option I know of is the dead-man. My question would be if it will work. I can also use an anchor and cable. I may have underestimated the angle at 15. Here's a picture.

Seems like the forces would still move inward (to the right in his picture) without resistance. I'm thinking maybe a long earth anchor on his side of the fence with a cable from anchor to top of post. Same thing the electric companies use on their power poles when they have a 90 degree angle or a dogleg.

I'd go with wood braces right there but if you have to leave it that way, pull ALL of the stretch out of the bottom two wires and a little out of the middle wire and none out of the top two so that when everything comes tight it doesn't bend the top of the post over.

I would put a nice heavy wood post on the point and pack it in with big rocks. I use old telephone poles on my stress points. The big rocks are the key. Softball sized are best and pack them in with a spud bar. Better than concrete in my opinion.

Another possible idea is place h brace on either side of the point post. This h braces could take the pull straight on. The point post just has wire going from h brace to h brace with the point post keeping it on the line. Uncertain if this is clear. Just think of having a gate between the two braces without a point, after fence is built, place point post on line and then string wire around it tying in to each hbrace. Good luck.

:nod: A H brace both directions is all you need. Build it the same as if it was a 90 degree corner.

The way i do it, is have another pipe post back down the fence 6 feet each way from the one that is there and weld a pipe between at the top.

Thanks for the opinions, but while I was out there picking up this morning I talked with the neighbor lady and she relented on the dead-man. Said she was under the assumption that it would be something more that it really was. Please remind me to say no when asked by a city boy to work on his weekend place. :lol2:
