I've been trying fencline weaning for the first time on heifer calves that I plan to keep as replacements. All has gone well with minimal cow/calf stress. My question is - How long should I expect to keep the cow/calves seperated along the fenceline before I could return the calves back into the herd without the calves returning to their mother's bag???

I'd do at least 6 weeks. Over the years I've had too many decide to revert to infancy to dare risk a potential replacement's future by putting her back too soon. :p

We keep them seperated for 6-8 weeks, Just depends on when it's convenient to put them back with their mothers.

Last summer I had a hiefer that tried nursing on some Gelbvieh cows that had calves, some would let her. She had been weaned 6 weeks. She was an Angus. I then put her back in with the Angus herd, and she got the idea quick, as they were dry, and ornery at her.
