Fence tester

Well my $12 co-op fence tester broke today and this makes the 2nd one of them that I have bought. Does anyone have any suggestions for a new one or a good one that you use?

Any of the digital ones thta show actual voltage in digits. There are a couple on the market that will also point towards the direction of a ground/short/etc.
They're pricey and worth every penny

I agree, I bought a Gallagher Smart Fix and I think it saved back it's cost in labor the first month . About $105 I think .

If you took my digital tester away, I would have to quit the cattle business. Almost. Anyway, I am well pleased with the thing.

I don't use a tester - unless its a blade of grass - I like the chargers with the little monitor showing the output. If something goes wrong then it shows it at the box.

How does it tell you where a possible ground/short is that's a mile or more from the charger?

Get a hog-- they will tell you the second you have a short :)

The testers with the direction arrows are a real headache and time saver- worth every dime.
Mine is a STAFIX -- had it for 5 years so far.

Will a tester tell you where its at? I've always had to walk the fence to find out where its grounded at and usually can see the problem. A blade of grass will tell me right quick if its hot or not. But I don't use much electric fence so I'm over my head on this subject. To me, I'm just interested in knowing the thing is working at full potential and the charger gauge does that. If its not at full, I go for a walk.

With 30 miles of fence that goes in loops-- I like having a tool to tell me which way to walk-- and when I've walked too far.

Glad to hear so many positive comments about the newer digital testers.

I have been wondering if they were worth a darn or just another cash sink.

I was hopeful that like other electronic gadgets the price might come down some but it does not seem to be sliding at all.

I don't use a tester either. I have a meter on the box. If I need to know which direction, I put my ear down close to the wire on either side of the box or at junctions. You can hear the high tensile pinging in the insulators in the direction of the short.
