Fence charger problem

I have a Saco 50 fence charger that is only putting 2000 volts, that's with both ground and fence unconnected. I believe the norm is 7000 volts it max's out my fence tester. Any idea which part may be bad?

Something is taking it to ground and you haven't found it. Might be a stick a vine, wet grass but something is pulling it down.

Thanks CB, as usausal I was not a very good communicator. I just tested it again, this time with it setting on a chair in my living room, it was just plugged in and not hooked up to anything, still a weak 2000 volts. The sad thing is I walked the fence line 4 times before I decided to test the line going to the fence and then the box itself. It's always the last place you look, in this case the box.

Thanks Kenny, I did test it with and without the ground wire connected, same result.

The times when I've seen that happen one of the components on the board was bad. The local place that sold them just substituted different parts till it was fixed

The do work slick as snot on a door knob. I'ld go nuts without one. I have the older type that is still digital but you have to stick the probe in the gound and all it reads is voltage. Hardly ever use it anymore.
 
Wouldn't a digital multimeter do the same thing? Still has to have a grounding point though

Most of them aren;t build to handle 10k volts or even close to it.
 
Hmm, you can tell I don't use one much.
I just have one of those simple fence testers that light up

Splurge and get one of the fence compass types. If you have much hotwire you'll wonder why you did without it for so long

One of those do sound good and should save some walking and time, I'm sure getting tired of using my tongue to test a fence.

My box is out of warranty, so I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and buy a new one.

what kind of tester are you using? My digital tester has trouble at low frequency/and or low pulse width. Could it be that you output amp is ok but the pulse duration is too low.
 
If yours has a battery then it may be a weak battery. If it runs off 120V AC then I it could be a internal part problem. Saw one many years ago where the ceramic insulator on the output had actually gone bad causing low output voltage.
 
Two best things I ever bought was a truest flashing fence alarm, placed them strategically and between the two it tells me which way to go, then I made a jumper wire to ground Hotwire so I can work on it when the charger is still on, btw I have an old lacme 4 joule unit on 20 acres with 7600 volts, it hits nice
