Looking for recommendations and designs for a feedyard/ backgrounding lot on a small scale. I have a 4 acre lot I plan to use for this it is a square lot that will have a 5 stand hi tensile electric fence around the perimeter. Plan to build 5 board wood fence for the working areas. Looking g for suggestions for the feed, working, loading and any others. Drawings welcome.

You really need an area for receiving calves. About 1/2 acre would be fine or it could be the gathering area in your corral. You'll be getting some un-weaned calves that may go nuts so this area needs to be panel wire with a 2x8 along the top. Once the calves are coming to feed enthusiastically you can let them use the entire lot.

With 500lb calves you can walk among them and pour feed out of a bucket and not worry too much about getting run over. With larger animals it pays to put in a concrete apron, J bunks and feed from the outside.

Your board fence needs to 2x6 not fence plank. Forsure set it to feed from outside. Mine is on filter fabric with heavy rocks over top. Ran 2 cables over top of trough to keep them on there side. Walking in to feed them is for the birds.
