I have 3 cows ages 3 - 6 and a bull calf about 11 months old at my 10 acre property aproximatly 130 miles away from my permenant residence. I get to see them about every 1 - 2 weeks. My dad lives near by and drops by when I can't. They have free choice Bahia hay (4x5 round bales). I feed them Range Cubes and a mixture of 50% Cottonseed Meal and 50% Crushed Corn when we see them about every 7 days. I have a Mineral Salt Block out for them as well.

They seem to be thinner than I would like them to be, maybe because of the low quality Hay in the area this year. What would you guys recommend in my situation. I was thinking about Protein Supplement Tubs. Something that is free choice. But, I've never used them before. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks ahead of time!

If you can, give them 20% range cubes 2-3 times a week, maybe 3-4 lbs / head along with the free choice hay. If you can't get there that often, then using protein tubs is probably your best choice. A bit more expensive, but that's what's good about them - You can leave them out free choice.

There's lots of discussion on tubs, just do a search on protein tubs or range cubes.

Be ready for them to really eat those protein tubs when you first put them out but they should slow down after they catch up. Their hay consumption may increase at frist too. But it would be a pertty good choice if you cant be there to feed them more often.

For cubes, we like the 30-40% cottonseed cubes. More protein for your money.
