I am familiar with some negative views on feed efficiently testing. The idea is that measuring daily gain and feed to gain ratios favors bulls that are leaner bigger and hard to keep condition on. Easy fleshing bulls are then cast as inefficient because they tend to put more fat and fat is more energy intensive to produce. More pounds of feed to make a pound of fat.
What if you measured fat cover and intramuscular fat as part of the test (not my idea, it has been done for a while) would large framed bulls dominate ADG? Would they have lower fat cover and IMF? Would smaller frame bulls have large feed to gain ratios and more fat?
What if I the test results pointed to a moderate framed high ADG bull with a good fat cover and intramuscular fat that was also efficient?
