Fantastic 3 way cross on steers

I was at the gas station at lunch time and a guy pulled in with a trailer load of some of the finest baldy and brockle faced weanling steers I have seen. Upon chatting he said that he buys high quality 50% Balancer cows and puts a herf bull on them and then comes back on those heifers / cows with a Gelbvieh bull and on the resulting heifers with an Angus bull in a 3 farm rotation. Those steers would really mash down the scales. Very thick. I have seen some Limi x Herf baldy calves that I thought were the nicest I have seen in baldys but I think these were better. It seems like a complicated system to maintain multiple generations trying to stabilize each breed in the cross but it was evidently working for him.

I can't wait till next years calves when I do a "Southern Balancer" with a black Gelbveih. I hope those beefmasters of mine will help bottum out the scales.

Music to my ears, Hoss. My cowherd is mostly angus/brangus. I've run Hereford bulls for two years now(don't tell Knersie :lol: ) and just started adding in balancer instead of angus this year. The end goal(for now anyway :roll: ) is balancer and Hereford in a two way cross. I might use a specific brangus bull here and there on the cleaner cows to even things up a little and keep that part of heterosis in the mix.

I know I'm not in traditional 'cow country' and I'm pretty young and green behind the ears but the nicest steer I ever did see was an Angus(red)xHerefordXGelbvieh steer. He too was thick, the girl who had him on the other side of the barn didn't look bad either.
