dont know about the cow but the calves do awful well. when you cross two different breeds for the F1 You use two breeds that compliment each other like herf/angus bra/herf and so on

That would make every calf an F1 you would never get past that. Im not one to contradict anybody, but I would research that.

You get an F2, etc; as you breed the F1; thus decreasing the benefit gained from the original cross heterosis the farther away you get from it.

So theoretically speaking an F1 would be a good cow to have in your heard raising beef, but not so good raising replacements

That is correct. F1 means first filial generation. It is a term in genetics refering to the first generation in respect to the parent generation. If you cross F1 X F1, this produces the F2 generation with respect to the original parents, that is the grand parents .

In cattle breeding, the term is uaually used when talking about crossbred offspring. Then you have to specify what breeds were crossed. Angus X Hereford F1, or whatever.

It is a genetics term. It doesn't even have to refer to cattle or animals. Could be used talking about plant breedng. in fact, earliest research was done with garden peas.

i am thinking when someone asks such a basic question in a general way, a simple answer will do just fine.
