I need to replace the shocks on my 2001 F150. Looked at the rear shocks and the upper connection seems to be inaccessible. How do you remove and install these shocks???

Take them to your nearest car shop... thats what I did on my 99 F150 when I installed new Rancho's. I dont know why they made them that way... but they are.

My daughter is the camera bug in our house. I don't have a digital camera. I'll try to get her to take a couple of pictures to post. However, I did talk to someone who referred me to another forum for Fords. Posted a question regarding the rear shocks and had an answer in a couple of hours. When I first looked at the rear shocks from underneath, it appeared I would have to take some sort of a plate aloose. Well, what I found out is that you have to access the top nut on the shock from between the truck bed and the frame. I can barely see the top when peeking over the rear wheel. Looks like it will take some time and doing to get it off. I do have an air ratchet, that should make it somewhat easier. Will let you know how it turns out.

That's a good forum as well. I posted on F150online which seems to be good for information you can't get out of a Chilton's repair manual. But a lot of the posts there have to do with body lifting and I'm a little to old for that. Don't want to have to use a step ladder to get in my truck. :D

you need to get a socket and a flex head rachet on the nut of the shock, then if it is factory shocks that you are removing they will probably have a plastic cover on the shock housing, take a knife and remove it then might need a good pair of channel lock pliers or large vice grips and instead of trying to turn the nut off the shock hold the rachet in place and use the channel locks and turn the shock housing instead, besure to spray something on the nut/shock bolt like pb blaster (the best) first, after you get it loose you should be able to hand spin the shock out

I don't have a flex head ratchet, but I am removing the original shocks. Had not thought about cutting the plastic skirt. I hoped there would be a place on the stud where I could get a second wrench grip. Have all sorts of visegrips, you think I could get one to grip the nut on top and then try to spin the shock??

well you dont have to use a flex head , it is just easier to slip in from the top, plain rachet and socket should work, you just need to get something on top to keep the nut from turning just be sure to use some kind of rust penetrant and let it soak for bout 10 mins, also you may be able to use an open end wrench where you can angle, I would get an extra hand to hold it for while you turn the shock, hope this helps

I did spray all the connections with WD-40 a couple of days ago to try and loosen up the nuts. If the weather will give me a break I'll see about getting them changed. 20 degrees this morning. Brrrr.
