Ever dusted millet in? Need your opinion.

Been in a 50 year drought and was trying everything to get some kind of grazing for cows. About two weeks ago we had a chance of rain so I drilled Tiftleaf3 in some prepared ground that I had packed after cultivation. Soil moisture was about 4 inches down and set seed about 1 - 1.5 inches. (figured the seed would be as dry in soil as in the bag) Anyway, some of it has come up but stand is spotty. Mostly came up on lower areas. Haven't had rain since it was planted. Looks like we will get a soaking tomorrow.

Any ideas on how the seed has faired being in the dirt this long? And do you think it will make a stand?
 
I suspect it is sitting there waiting for a little moisture to make it sprout. From what I understand - and I could be wrong on this - millet is pretty tough.
 
well havin gone through this every year but this year with crops, your millet might of sprouted and died. oviously not all of it died, but on the fact that not all of it came up thats what it sounds like. dig a few up and see what you find underground. if it hasnt sprounted then it should still come up when it rains. but if its sprouted and died, your screwed.
 
"Dustin seed in" is a common occurence around here,I have had seed lay alot longer than 2 weeks ,get moisture and get a stand,hopefully you will get some rain soon

Thanks for your replies. Dug seed up yesterday and only found one dead "bean sprout". Never could find the seed itself - my eyes aren't that good anymore. :oops: We are now getting a gentle soaking. If the millet will get going I can let my pastures rest.

Millet is pretty tough stuff.

My Dad always said that millet would come up if you planted it on the "Beach".

Maybe you'll get a good stand after this rain. Hope so.

How much were your seed do you remember?

They charged me $32 bucks per bag for Tifleaf 3 but I was in a hurry and couldn't wait for my normal supplier to order it. :roll:
 
its not your eyes. seed seems to disappear. that being said, it sounds like it should still come up. expecially sense you didnt find a whole bunch of dead sprouts.

One guy quoted me $32 but I ended up getting it for $22.50 which was much cheaper than I was expecting.
 
Well I'm happy to say you were right!! Dug some dirt today in the fields and everywhere I dug I found new sprouts. Now, if the my sprigs will just do the same everything will be hunky dorey.
