If the hay was on your property and the man you sold it to did not collect it within 6 months, after you asking him to a few times, here it becomes yours again. and you could have done what you like with it. but you must keep records of what you have done.

We probably have something like that too but there is what is legal and then there is what is right. Since he had not inconvenienced me in any way it was no bother other than my wanting closure.
 
Rye seed in exchange for hay"cattle feed" insurance during a drought. Sounds like good planning and ethical by each of you. Good job. Great resolution for your concern also.
 
I would guesstimate what 4 year old hay is worth, and give him the money for it, or give him X# bales that 4 year old hay is worth-not much) and call it even. Its not your fault the guy is a procrastinator. If he doesn't se eit your way, i say deals off.
