Anyone have any advice,suggestions,disclaimers,testimony?Getting ready to "jump" in.The whole deal seems pricey(especially if equipment is included),but necessary in areas of technician shortages.
 
Genex put on a good school recently in my area. We had a lot of hands in experience which made for good learning. My advice is for you to sign up for one that will have a LOT OF COWS/HEIFERS for you to work in, and take asprin the night before!
 
Try to find a school that offers a rebate on the school cost in the form of semen or AI equipment. We went through the Select Sires school, and it was a good one. As mentioned earlier, you need lots of cows to practice on. Expensive? Depends on your goals. Complete AI kit + tank should cost in the $700-800 dollar range. Then you have to buy semen. You can still breed a LOT of cows for the cost of a $2000 bull. Plan on having at least two 30-45 minute windows per day to watch your cows to determine heat. IMO if you don't live with your cows, the cost effectiveness for a small operation goes way down due to missed timing. For us, after getting through the initial learning curve, the physical act of AI'g the cow is pretty easy. Heat detection can be a bear.

When we coupln't spend the amount of time needed to heat detect we used tailhead paint. If it was gone in the morning we bred that evening, if it was gone in the evening we bred in the morning. The hardest part sometimes is keeping the paint heavy enough to be able to see if anything is happening.

are you talking about ET or A.I.? do you already know how to a.i./palpate. my suggestion would be to take that course first, practice until you become very proficient & then take the ET course.

if you already know how to a.i. & palpate with good accuracy then i'd say it could be a really good venture.
 
I am already on the AI learning curve by way of 2 of my neighbors(both ex-dairymen).The next logical step would be ET training and there is a tremendous shortage of technicians in our area.So yes I was looking for input on ET such agtech(Kansas) or the one in Meridian ,Miss.I think there is one at College Station,Texas,but I can't find anything on it.
