EPDs

Help Support CattleToday:

I'm assuming that's a reference to this. EPDs are a "tool." Like any tool if used inappropriately your results may vary. For example, a circular saw is a tool, but if you use it as a hammer don't act surprised if it doesn't work well. :)

I have calves on the ground from 3 sires -- one sire's calves so far have all come 7-10 days early -- and that would match his EPD for gestation length of -4 days (he has a few cows left to calve that will bring the average to -4). I used a bull 2 years ago that caused all kinds of calving issues and sure enough he's in the bottom 10% for gestation length and birth weight -- lesson learned.

EPD accuracy is your friend. EPDs on yearlings are for entertainment.
