How much difference can I really expect to see in a calf's weaning weight with a difference of 10 (for example 35 and 45)on the WW epd?
 
Are you asking if there will be an exact 10 lb. difference? I doubt it. EPD's are accurate enought that you'll get a high percentage of that 10 lb.s
 
epd's are "expected progeny differences". if bull A has a WW EPD of +35 & bull B has a weaning weight EPD of +45, you would expect the calves of bull B to be 10 lbs heavier (on average) at weaning than the calves of bull A.
 
EPDs are expected averages. The calf with the smaller EPD could VERY well be the larger calf; but if accurate, a hundred calves would average 10 pounds more with the higher EPD.

A calf with a phenotype suitable for your environment will make more difference in WW than an average epd across the nation. It could very well be that the calf with the lesser epd has a phenotype which will work better as far as weight for you than the heavier ww epd bull. EPD's are a compilation of weights across the nation. The results on your farm will be more specific and possibly different than the national average.

Ollie, In the Canadian Conception to Consumer Program (of which I think I sent you some data) the BW, Weaning, and Yearling EPD's were very telling in the final results.

We were amazed at how close the calves' weights at the different the intervals closely coincided with the EPD's of the different bulls in the program. But I'm sure this is attributed to high degree of accuracy in those bull's EPD's.

The accuracy of EPD's is what makes it work.

On the other hand, EPD's with low accuracies is little better than a guess.
 
Mike , I agree that accuracy makes a large difference. On that note though I would assume these bulls were fairly contemporary for age and probably of a similiar phenotype. Is that true? Were there any 5 frames or 8 frames?
