Do any of you have expereince with Eastern Gamma Grass? I have a small 2nd year stand and have some questions for bur dock control. That is about the only weed that the gamma grass hasn't out grown and choked out. Not many chemicals approved for gamma grass that I'm aware of. Any help would be appreaciated.

your cows will sure be eating good. Good management will keep the Eastern Gamma Grass going for now on. When you planted did you have a soil test done? What did you add? what is your PH? Get the biological system working right with a PH around 6.6 to 7.2
Will not work good with a low PH. Grass will grow better, weeds less so.

No, I did not get a soil test done before, so I don't know the Ph. Last year when planted I did not add any fertilizer or chemicals at all, I just relied on the atrazine caryover from the previous corn crop to help with weed control. i did no grazing or haying with it the first year. This spring I burned it off and hit it with 75# of N. when it got to 24" tall I turned the cows in and grazed it down to about 8". those cows did not leave the field for the first 3 days, I don't think they even left for water. my brother and I had to drive them out to get them off of it. there is basically no weeds in it other than the bur dock which I think the cows would have ate it I was able to leave them in longer but didn't want to over graze the gamma. do you know if you can use 24-d safely on gamma?
 
I wouldn't graze it over half. 24" don't graze below 12". They well over graze it in a hurry. I'm not sure what can be used to kill the burdock. Someone here may speak up. If not ask your seed dealer. Eastern Gamma is related to corn. Of course you can't use all the same sprays since your grazing. Get the microbes working in the soil will help in the future. Try less N next year. You should see the Gamma grow well with less. Put your money in minerals. It will help the Gamma long term.
 
I have 10 acres of gamma that is about 10 years old now. First year just clipped it. Next two years I think I hayed it and have pastured it since. Have burned it several times, but not this spring. Mine here in northern Mo. is about a foot tall or maybe a little taller. We have been dry. Will probably turn cows in to it in a week or two. Last year I had the field sprayed with Atrizine and 2-4d just afte Iburned it. Had several broad leaf weeds and a lot of bluegrass. I see there is a lot of blue grass again this year and I think it hurts the production of the gamma. I liken it to no-tilling corn across a water way. You know what that amounts to. We have a good stand and the bunches have gotten a lot bigger. I do soil test every year and fertilize to test. Like the grass but would not like to have the whole farm seeded to gamma. hhh

What is the seed like, do you need a special seeder?

I planted 10#'s per acre and it cost around $6.50 a lb.
Planted it with a corn planter.
