early bred heifers

last year i weaned several heifers to keep as replacements...they were weaned at about 7 1/2 mths...2 of them were bred and eventually had calves at about 16 mths old...i really didn't notice them being bred until it was very late in the pregnancy....my question is this..when i wean heifers this year will lutalayce shots have long term adverse affects on the heifers ?? i know proper and defined breeding seasons would have prevented this...

We had similar concerns before we started using lute at weaning. There are no long term problems with using prostaglandin at weaning. It was recommended to me that a shot of dexamethasone be given at the same time as in certain instances prostaglandin won't get them all aborted.

We use straight lute and never had a problem. It's a good plan especially if they are Gelbvieh influenced. They can and will cycle at 5 months
