Hi There,

Just wanted to know what the letter is for 2006 for my calves ear tags. I searched around on the internet and could'nt find anything.
Thanks for your time, again.

I'm just curious..

s='06 according to who?

Is there some "Cow Calendar Keeper" somewhere that determines this stuff?

All I know is that they call it the international year code. Most breed associations use it. I like to use the last digit of the year to start all of the numbers for the calves. This year I my first calf was 601S.

Why the redundancy? If you have the S you have the year

(1) We don't end up with so many similar numbers that way. 1A, 1B, 1C...

(2) It is easier for me to look at the first digit and get the year born without having to think about it.

(3) When the tags are dirty or faded out and I can't read the first or last digit I can still figure the number out.

I also put sire number on top and dam on bottom and birthdate on back.

Not all of the letters are used. Some are skipped, I guess because they look too much like a number or another letter.

I O Q and Z are not used in the year letter code.
it starts with 1991 as A, 92 = B, etc... you can figure the rest out.
If not mistaken i think this was developed by BIF (Beef Improvement Federation) then adopted by breed associations and most Universities.

I think Z is used but not V.

Not real readable but here's the year code from BIF

APPENDIX 2.2, INTERNATIONAL YEAR/LETTER DESIGNATIONS FOR
ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION
International letters are designated for each year of birth. This option is easy to
use in conjunction with numbers. For example, M001 and M002 might be used to
indicate the first and second calf born in the year 2002.

That's interesting, I might use that instead of just using the prenumbered allflex tags. It gets kind of messy when you have to change the registers when you sell, say #20; and have to replace it with a new #20.

I just wonder if I should just start with ''A'', or get with the program and start using ''S''.

If you start with 'A', you'll confuse prospective buyers (and probably yourself once you get into the swing of things) I'm thinking, not to mention the fact that there would be no purpose to it. The purpose of this post (before I got sidetracked) was to suggest you check with your local co-op and see if they do custom numbered tags. Our's do and, since you're right next door to us, the possibility exists that your's does too.

Sure makes it difficult when we call some of them "o'l number 67" or "little number 34"...do we go by the "O" or the "L".
Looks like we need to rename the herd or wait until 2015 to assign number names.
We're not a fancy outfit so I guess that we'll just let the grandkids keep on naming the calves.
Just my two bits worth....DMc
