Dung Beetles

Here's an interesting video on Dung Beetles, they're actually really beneficial insects to have. They help remove cow patties, and reduce horn fly populations.

You just gave me an idea NovaTech. "CAB Excretion Marbles" or "Natures Marbles". India has been burning this stuff for years. How about selling the brown balls in bags to be burned under a hot plate in the kitchen? An immediate energy saver!! :lol2:

As for me, yes I work for that website, and I usually only post videos that are related to the subject at hand. As for the subject, I haven't seen anyone ever talk about Dung beetles in all the forums I look in so I thought it might be interesting to start a subject. If you find my post of my video annoying or detracting in anyway from the conversation, just let me know and I'll steer clear(no pun intended) of this forum.

If you can't get it to play make sure your computer is up to date with the news windows media player and internet explorer. If you have ie6 you really should upgrade to ie7 or ie8. If after that you still have problem please let me know and I'll make sure we figure it out.

I have heard that ivomec (sp?) is responsible for killing off dung beetles.
Of course, this was told to me by a cydectin sales rep.

On the other hand, I haven't seen any in a while, and I wish I had them on my place.

Great video! Thanks for the link. This is particularly important for those of us that are involved in rotational grazing (MIG). A natural return of nutrients to the soil to say nothing of getting rid of pests is something we should all be keenly interested in.

Oh, goody, my favorite subject!!!!!!!!!! The dung beetles are not doing much these days. No rain here in Tennessee has knocked them underground for a bit. It is entirely too dry for them to work. They like the soil to have some moisture to go mining under the cow piles. A time or two, I have found rollers underneath a porch light the next morning, so I know they are around too. But I think they like stronger smell.
I have a Tom cat that doesn't cover his messes too well. What a stinker he is. I saw a roller type beetle around that. This dung beetle was much larger than the mining dung beetles. So I can see them going to the Coyote poop too.
The dung beetle is great for reducing the horn fly population and the internal parasites also. When they roll the manure up to take below in the tunnels they have dug, the eggs they have laid, will start eating on the manure ball, and then the earthworms come and finish it off. So the dung beetle attracts earthworm that bring in manure and aerates the soil. The dung beetles are also actually taking the manure and putting it back into the ground where it can all be absorbed and used where as most of the nutrients run off when you drag the pasture or put it in a manure spreader. So....Have you hugged your dung beetle today???
