Dug up an old picture

Going through some old pictures, I found this one.. unfortunately she only had one calf before she got atypical pneumonia in the summer, and it was the days before Draxxin, there was nothing we could do to help her. She was a good producer and a great character as well.

Unfortunately I can't go back 25 years and make her pose properly, she wasn't swaybacked at all like she looks (maybe she just got up?)


Pic was taken Summer 1992.. I know she was a bottle baby, I'm thinking she was 3/4 herf, 1/4 simm or something?

She looks like she might be stretching after getting up. Sure hate to lose a good one like that. Cattle meds have definitely come a long way over the years. I like going through old photos like that from time to time, and remembering some of the old ones that have come and gone over the years.

This is one of her mates from the same year, also bought as a calf, and suspect she was a bottle baby as well.. she's in her retirement here at about 15.. about half my herd is from her.. Not much to look at but her daughters and (great great) granddaughters are really good

Gonna have to disagree there - she died of pneumonia while she should have been young and healthy. If a cow can't thrive in the modern world, she sure as heck wouldn't have made it in the wild and nature's the ultimate culler.

cows needa do the basics - breed on time, calve easily, mother up, milk good, and remain living. Beyond that is what we control on our time: horns, colour, attitude, age, etc

This was happening when they were on nice pastures.. Hot weather was one of the constants.. Lost about 5-6 cows to it, only one to survive it was a yearling heifer, but she was damaged for life with a persistent cough, her lungs were shot.. LA200 did absolutely nothing against it.. they'd go down over the course of about a week, just coughing and getting shorter and shorter of breath.
