Ditto about taking your time. There's no need to get in a dither and rush. The semen is not going to immediately die when thawed.
My husband has been breeding cattle AI for close to 50 years (he is much older than I). He is very methodical and doesn't rush. When you get nervous, it can make the cow nervous too. It helps if you can have another person there to help. Sometimes I have to pinch the cow along her spine to make her relax to make it easier for him to pass through the cervix.
You'll get better the more you do it.
