I would have to say 16 gauge just due to having a couple of centuries of shell's stockpiled.
Again I could reload for year's due to having several boxes of solid brass hull's.
If it wasn't for that I would say 12 gauge.

I don't remember the make or model but back when I was growing up there was an old guy here who had a single shot gun with inter-changable barrels. 12 ga and 30-30. He hunted deer, phesants, and ducks with the same gun. My trapping partner had a Savage over -under 30-30 and 20 ga (3 inch). I can't remember the model number on those Savage rifles. Most of them were 22-410. I could make that 30-30/20 ga work if I had to.

I did some research the new ones are model 42 the older version was a model 24. Now that I think about it I am thinking I need one of these. Anyone see a good condition model 24 in 30-30/20 ga let me know. I will figure out how to get it.
 
Rossi (I know, junk) still make a interchangeable barrel. 22/410/20. Single shot break action. Just gave one to my nephews to have fun with. They are more of a training set up and super short stocks.
