Driving versus Concreting oilfield pipe.

This fall I have a corral project lined up and I’m considering whether or not it makes sense to drive the posts or concrete them as we have done it the past. It is going to be around 50 posts total.
 
If it's not too much of a hassle and expense to rent/borrow a driver and a machine to put it on, I would drive them to save time vs. digging holes and mixing concrete. You'll need a man on the ground to check the post for plumb and help the machine operator make adjustments as you drive the post in. If you have the choice, a vertical lift skid steer is the ideal machine for driving posts IMO.
 
Drilling and setting in concrete makes it easiest to set them in a straight line and plumb. Driving is faster and easier and just add an extra foot or more to the amount of post in the ground. Usually have to push and tamp the gap to get them perfectly straight.
 
I agree that driving will likely be your best bet. How deep did you plan to go? I've heard that 6' deep is about right, but I would imagine soil type would affect that.

We built our corrals 7 or 8 years ago and drove all the post 4' deep. I noticed last year that the perimeter sections that get allot of pressure are getting loose. I added a 140' alley this year that runs the length of our trap and corrals. I did a mix of driving and concrete on it. I drilled a hole 18 to 24" deep then drove the post 2' so each post is 2' in the ground and filled filled with 2' of concrete for a total of 4'. We'll see how it holds. Post are 2 7/8" drill pipe driven in black land. None of the interior corral sections were loose only the extior sections that get heavy pressure.

Do you have top rails welded on? Those add a lot of strength to continuous fence panels.

Corrals are built out of 2 7/8" drill stem uprights 10' apart with 2 7/8" top rail saddled and welded. We use sucker rod instead of continuous panels. I used continuous panels on the fencing around the house and they are nice.

I can't remember the exact depths we drive them. The Skidsteer will only raise so high so that's the length we cut pipe. Seems like it'll raise 9'8" maybe. When we drive fence braces we drive more in the ground than above by a couple inches. The corrals are taller so not as much in the ground.
 
That one time a pipe post rusted out, and I had to dig out a wheelbarrow sized concrete block so I could replace it, I swore never to concrete any fence post anything into the ground again. Built an arena recently, 2 5/8" pipe with the top rail providing structural integrity. Drove them 3' - 4' deep, but for horses it should be fine.
