Draxxin for Foot Rot

We have a cow with foot rot, it’s not super bad yet but she’s lame as could be. I know Draxxin is really good for foot rot and that’s what we have. But we bred her 26 days ago, she didn’t come back into heat so should be bred. Is Draxxin okay for pregnant cows???

We've used Draxxin on pregnant cows and didn't notice any bad effects or abortions. We mainly give it to yearlings though. I'm sure others will advise also.

Label said it’s unknown with pregnant cows… etc. another person we asked and a vet said it should be fine though so

We usually use LA200 or LA300 for hoof rot. Never had an issue with pregnant cows.

I’ve felt when cows get foot rot it does affect pregnancy. Sometimes, not always, making them late or even open. I asked my vet the same question you’re asking and he said the infection from the foot rot was more apt to affect things than the draxxin.

Generally, if the label says "unknown" it's because they haven't conducted tests. I get that. How would you find enough pregnant cattle that happen to have foot rot for a legit, conclusive outcome? That said, I've used it in pregnant cattle and so has my vet with no adverse reactions.

My experience is that LA200 or LA300 or even Nuflor works better on foot rot. I believe that Draxxin is a miracle drug and great for respiratory, but I’ve never personally had any luck with it on foot rot. I always feel like I wasted a high dollar shot and wound up treating it with something else.

The vet at Valley Vet advised Nuflor for my old cow that was hobbling lame from foot rot. It is a hoof infection that spreads to the joint. She also has dairy cattle. She said she likes Nuflor "because it goes right to the bone". Two IM doses given 48 hours apart worked for us. I also gave Banamine pour on for the pain.

Not a vet and this is not a vet recommendation, but if i treat for foot rot i always soak the foot and ankle with diesel or kerosene.

Also, LA 200 burns like crap and I suspect causes some tissue damage at the injection site and takes a relatively large dose, so for convenience Draxxin is hard to beat even if it costs a fair bit more.

Cost doesn’t matter to me if it’ll save a cow. Is there anything I can put on her foot to help? We have her a semi dry pen (impossible with all the rain we’ve gotten)

Nuflor is given 10ccs at a site so 3 injections are required and 3 more 48 hours later. It doesn't do tissue damage, just squirt some alcohol on their neck, tie her head back and stick her. I really like using Banamine pour on for the pain you can get prescribed a 100 cc container. They walk better and this moves the drug around in the joint.

My Vet would rather I buy from VV. Vet is 90 miles away so it's much easier for them to click OK and let VV handle the rest, vs the small staff at the Vets office having to handle the ordering/stocking/shipping.

I don't call my vet every time I need something for the cattle. Its was just the first time I went through VV so the office knows I'm obtaining meds from them. When the VV contacts the office to get the OK for the script he just OKs it, whatever it is. He knows I have an old cow, calves and milk cows. Most of the stuff I get they don't even have in the office. He does not charge me for this. He used to see cattle years ago and now he is elderly and gets around with a walker But when I take my dog to him he is paid well and with gratitude. He is a wonderful doctor.
