Down Cow

I live in Seneca, SC and I have a black angus cow that weighs approx. 1100 lbs. down. Vet said possible mineral deficiency. Has given her multiple injections for that but cow still can not get up. She tries, but can not. Eating and drinking well and is alert. Any suggestions?

How old of a cow? Has she calved yet or is she milking?

If she's much over 3 there is little to no chance she will ever get up.

Well that's a good sign. What injections did the vet give...dex, cortisone, anti inflam??? Did she recently calve? What are the possibilities of injury? You will have to give us more info.

As others have asked here. would need more info on the cow. But I dont believe i have ever heard of a cow not getting up because of a mineral deficiency.. especially if she is eating & drinking good.. something else going on, and I am surprised your vet didnt try harder.

I would think she is talking about a copper deficiency and most likely gave her a shot of thiamine and a shot of broad spectrum antibiotic @ maybe B-12.
Thiamine takes about 24 hrs to see any effects, if it helps at all.

Best to get you a hip lifter, and get her up. If that don't do it, then there's not a lot you can do.

Unfortunately I agree. I just had 2 old cows go down on me. They were in decent condition but both had January calves drawing them down. After hauling water and feed to them for a couple of days, I decided that the most humane thing was to put them down.. Now I'm bottle feeding their calves..

I got one a vet had been giving injections for a week. Vet gave up and her and the owner called me to come get her. I gave her two tubes of CMPK right there in the pasture and then pulled her into the trailer. Took her home and doctored her raw knee joints. The CMPK had her on her feet within a day.

The owner had her on mineral blocks. I asked him if he realized they were 97% salt? He did not. 50 lb block has 1 1/2 pounds of mineral. That isn't enough. Cows need loose mineral free choice. They'll probably scarf it down on you at first because they are lacking. After they catch up their consumption will taper off.

Several places on the net supply CMPK gel. Get yourself two tubes that are about the size of a caulk tubes. Get the end all the way down in her throat and disburse the full tube all at once. Give her about a minute and disburse the second tube. She is likely to be on her feet within an hour.

I have had a couple of cows that this did not work on. It has worked on cows the vets injections had no effect on.

I hate taking advantage of people.

There is an opportunity to make money off of these cows if a person has a bit of patience. Cattle prices are way up right now. There is a probation officer who now calls me the "Cow Whisperer". CMPK Gel is $3 a tube if you buy it in bulk. Two tubes is $6. You are saying the cows are either about to calve or just calved? I am not a genius. More like a plugger when it comes to cows. I would spend the $6. If that did not work then buy yourself a bullet maybe.

Better yet get yourself an IV set and give her CMPK in the vein. Works much faster and doesn't blister the inside of the mouth like the gel can do. Follow the CMPK with a bottle of Dextrose.

Do you see any problem with giving it along with the I V cocktail most vet recommends?
