Down cow..

Yesterday after work I went to feed hay and found nurse cow down. She was fine the day before. Called the vet out and he gave her a bottle of calcium, Dextrose and penicillin. She worked up a little and then went right back down hill from there. No clue what is going on. Doc couldn’t figure out what was wrong with her. We put a heavy blanket on her as it was quite cold. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like anything has helped. Will keep an eye on her.. Always has to be the favorite.

It's a lousy situation to be in :(

She calved May 1st. She got milk fever after calving. She was having the same symptoms but it doesn’t make much sense that she’d get that now. But we didn’t have much to lose. She was only nursing one calf now and that’s the calf she had. She is a 6-7yo Jersey.

Toxic mastitis will look like milk fever, and wouldn't be uncommon in a cow at that stage of lactation.

Bet checked her for mastitis and everything was flowing good.

She might be full of plastic net, twine or shopping bags that blew into your field.I have had it happen.

Probably won't help since the vet gave her calcium, but I would give her another tube or two of CMPK.

we had a simmental cow go down for the second time and after 2 tubes of cmpk gel she was up in the morning. about a year later same thing happened and we gave her 2 tubes of cmpk - she did not get up. called the vet and she was given iv two bottles of magnesium and other stuff and banamine. then after about 45 minutes we got her up and to the barn. then after banamine withdrawal period took her to slaughter. she was down in trailer when i got to the unloading area, but got her up and out. that was the most expensive cow we had. that was not good, but not as bad as being dead. good luck with her.

Cow is still alive. She will be going to NDSU Diagnostic lab tomorrow if no improvement which I doubt there will be.
