In light of last week's Political debacle, think about the implications that this little story has on OUR future, and perhaps change the Moral of the story at the end of the piece! I hesitate to say "I told you so", but - - -I TOLD you what THEY have done for 75 years. . . . .and this is -o-o-o-o-o-o-o-n-n-n-l-l-y-y- the beginning, Folks! Only the Beginning!!

OLD VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible

MODERN VERSION: The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.

CBS, NBC, ABC & CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. America is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can it be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, "It's Not Easy Being Green."

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where the news stations film the group singing, "We shall overcome". Jesse then has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's sake.

Ted Kennedy & John Kerry exclaim in an interview with Dan Rather that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair share".

Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act," retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of single-parent welfare recipients. The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the once peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Vote!

"VOTE" is right - -BUT - -be darned sure that the people you vote FOR will do the job they are OBLIGATED to do!

Your right DOC. I'm afraid to think of what it is going to take to wake this country up. I was praying that 9/11 did it, but it didn't. We have such short memories.

The Real Modern Version:

The ants are the middle class that comprise the bulk of the insect world. Regardless of what color they are, red, black, yellow, or brown, they work hard and play by the rules.

In the old days, only one ant in the family had to work and one stayed home with the kids. Because of declining buying power and rising healthcare costs, both ants now have to work to stay ahead.

The grasshopper (let's call him George) inherited most of his fortune and has never truly had to work for a living. Oh sure, he managed a bug baseball team for a time. But mostly he has lived off Daddy Grasshopper's wealth and reputation (even avoiding service during the bug war because of his family's position).

The Grasshopper wanted to help other wealthy insects like himself, so with the plotting of a slug named Karl, he began to plan a takeover. With the help of the slug, he convinced enough ants to vote for him by focusing on distracting issues such as:

1. The right of ants to carry sticks as weapons.
2. Should two boy ants or two girl ants be able to marry?
3. Hey, I'm a real cowboy ant! I talk just like you!
4. I believe in the BIG BUG in the sky. I talk to him daily.

With the Grasshoppers "aw shucks" personality, and the slugs slimy tactics, the grasshopper was elected President. He and his cronies cut taxes on the richest and fattest bugs and did everything he could to protect the earnings of exploitative multinational oil corporations and pharmaceutical companies.

The Grasshopper's political party tried to convince the lighter colored ants that the darker ants, despite a history of oppression, were really just lazy slobs living off government money (very few were). They convinced people it would be good to cut welfare programs. They then increased the military spending and canceled the estate tax.

The Grasshopper made a grave mistake by traveling across a pond and hitting a hornet's nest with a stick, thus starting an expensive and unwinnable war on "Hornet Terror". With the slug's help, he somehow convinced many of the ants (who were working too hard to pay attention) that he was still the toughest bug and would protect them from the hornets.

After six years of stupid blunders, the ants finally got fed up (especially some crucial rural Midwestern and Western ants), and voted many in the Grasshopper's party out of office in a stunning defeat. Maybe the ants weren't as easily duped as the slug thought they would be.

The Grasshopper was forced to keep the Slug on his staff because he feared the slug would write a tell-all book exposing even more of his corrupt stupidity.
