I don't think it matters how old he is that is a pretty poor bull at least from that angle. Looks like a cow and just as plain as one could be. Compare him to some of the Herefords recently posted on the show your bull thread. But that doesn't mean he won't make you money if he breeds everything. Maybe he would look better with more pictures
 
He's not great, but I've seen a helluva lot worse bulls on CT lately, at least he has bone and some width.

His dingle sure dangles a bit too much. Being very conservative he really has almost no masculine signs. Not sure what else can said.

Thanks. Wanted honest reviews. I may keep him for the year then send him to the sale barn. I only have 9 head and didnt want to mess with AI. I paid $1800 for him. With the cost of AI and when I sell him I should come out on top. I dont have top $ for a registered bull right now. Plus doesnt make sense to pay big bucks for a bull to breed 9 cows.
 
I bet he will do just fine for your purposes. First bull we used was and ugly commercial simangus that we bought for kill price and he actually threw some really nice calves that grew better than the registered simangus we bought the next year.

He is young. He could change a whole lot in the next couple of years.
I agree with the others, he will likely suit you just fine for your nine cows.
 
That bull will do just fine. Hes young give him some groceries and 6 months and you wont be able to tell if its the same bull in the picture. I like his color and how he is marked up as well. Should get some good white face calves out of him.
 
Yes I liked his color. Hoping to get some black baldies. There were bulls available mixed with Brahma but I wanted 100% hereford to try and get rid of the Brangus ears on the calves. You get docked a little for the brahma ears at the auction barn.
 
I don't think he looks as bad as people think as well. I think he is a good looking bull. Hes not as muscular and thick as most people would want in a bull but he will grow into that and like you said if he doesn't work out you can sell him and get something else. Hes just young give him time. The black baldies will sell good no matter what at most places. I have had a bull that looked WAY WAY worse then him and a lot of his calves weaned at 550+.

We get docked for the Brahma ears as well. This bull will work perfect for you. I think he will do great.
 
I'm sure some will think this is a harsh assessment but I'm not a fan of trying to sugar coat things and say something that I don't believe myself. He looks like a cow with some nuts and a poorly made ding dong. I'm sorry if that seems harsh and critical but I'm sure there are probably people thinking the same thing that are being too nice not to admit it. I'm actually more frustrated with breeders that keep bulls like that intact and sell them as bulls instead of cutting them and feeding them out as steers. It doesn't help the Hereford breed out or even just cattle in general to have bulls like that in production IMO. The breed already has enough issues - whether legit or perceived - as it is to get past when trying to sell to commercial breeders that it's just frustrating to see bulls like that being sold because most reputable breeders of any breed should have the mindset that if a bull isn't good enough that you would not use him in your own program then why are you selling him to someone else as a bull they should be using?

I realize the need for a bull and everyone has different budgets but it's worth it to spend a little more if you have to on a good bull because with cattle prices as they are right now those extra pounds and muscling that a better bull would put on calves are going to pay off when you send those calves to the sale barn. It's not just about getting the black baldy look but you want some desirable carcass traits to go with it too.
 
Thing to also remember is that in the wild the wimpy bulls get pushed aside and don't get much of a chance to breed - there's always the dominant male keeping them in check. Us humans let our wallets and feelings dominate.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...might be somebody on here who feels the same way about SPH's bulls.

But, the bill collectors and my wife are A Lot more interested in the money than the fancy replacement heifer program my cousin and I started. Hahaha Bet he makes money with his $1800 bull.
 
Believe me we've had bulls that have been given harsh critiques by other breeders too, it is 1 man's opinion against another in the cattle business. Gotta have thick skin in this business because what 1 man thinks is ideal cattle another feller will surely disagree with you. That why everyone raises different breeds and even within the breeds itself you can find all kinds of variations of what 1 person thinks those animals should look like. My opinion is just 1 person's opinion and take it for what it is, I'm just saying we'd never sell nor use a bull that looked like that. We've probably steered bull calves that I'm sure there is someone out there that would have paid $1800 for to use as a bull but that's not the kind of business nor reputation we want. Of course he'll make some money because at $1800 he'll get some live calves and you can put some weight on that bull and send him to the sale barn and probably get more than what he paid for in salvage value but it doesn't change that he's not a very well made bull.
