She tends to always get her fair share and put off an awsome calf this past fall, a heifer....and we kept her too. If we had all cows that size and appetite, I don't think we could feed them :shock:

i could tell which calf was her's by looking. looks like she well make a nice addition to the herd. got some just like her make great cows bred to the right bull

We do name our cows. As a longhorn breeder, all our cattle are named when we register them. :cboy:

We only name our purebreds. There are two others who have names - an orphan and her sister who shared her milk with her. The rest go by tag numbers which they all know. We start teaching our replacement heifers their names or tag numbers as soon as possible. It makes sorting easier in the corral if they know their names.

Chowhound looks like she has a very suiting name! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Good Gracious! That must have been one heck of an eater! I would love to know how much Chowhound weighs. Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter....she NEVER loses weight and gets bigger when pregnant. Not too many would understand "Kiss"--I have a lineup of heifers that looked like the Kiss Band. Its a very unusual photo.

I would of named Spot--Eagle Poop. Its an Indian name : )

At our farm, all the cows and calves are tagged and are *mostly* known by their numbers.
However........ in short time the new calves start to display their personalities, or some birthmark or they were involved in some inappropriate escaping event ( 5 miles to the Golf Course ) and soon get a nickname according to one of those criteria.

Visitors to the farm enjoy hearing the names of the cattle, and the story that goes with it, much more than explaining the tag number information and what it means. I love it when little kids come up to me in a store and ask " how is the Harry Potter calf ?"

Last year we named a bunch of steers after the "Deadwood" characters.

I think this year we are doing the Sopranos.

Keeps things interesting, and fun. And of course it sparks conversations amongst strangers and it sometimes leads to friendships as well as cattle sales.

If they stay they get named.To get a jump on your next thread. All of the older cows(by 3yrs.) know their name. The three oldest I can send down the alley just by telling them it's their turn. And that's about as easy as it gets.

Don't limit your frivolous posts. You sound like you are taking care of your cows and enjoying them. That's good. We have our cows to make money off of but if I didn't enjoy them as well I'd go get a job that paid more. :lol:

Teaching a cow her name is easy. Say hello Chowhound, move Chowhound etc. Everytime you do anything with her use her name. She will learn it. Our cattle on sorting day go to the corral my mother stands at the gate and calls a cow. I am in the corral with a whip. The cow comes forward looks at me and I point at the gate saying "OK (her name/number)" and out she goes. It works with about 90% of our cows. The other 10% are mostly the young ones and don't know the system yet. Sometimes we do just get one that is feeling sassy. :roll: It makes it easier to leave in the ones that you want in and get out the ones you want out. Not the way everyone does it but it works well with us. Cows have brains, use them.

Well, now......the fact that you are so straightforward makes me believe what you are telling me. I have never heard of this. If I believe you can teach a cow its name (I have already realized how smart they are in other aspects), am I going to get ragged on this board for believing it??? You gotta get me some more telling me you can teach the cows their names! No offense I hope! I really do believe you do....just don't want to look like a sucker! Does that make sense? Ha!

I have tried to send a PM, but it seems to stay in my outbox and won't go anywhere!!! So I am pasting the message here. Sorry.....Thanks for being kind, I hoped you didn't think I was being rude. I think it is a neat idea. We only have 51 cows right now and 8 heifers weaning. Sounds like it makes your job a lot easier. We don't have much trouble getting them all in the catch pen, just a bag of pellets and they all act like spoiled children running into the pen to see who can get there first. As far as getting them to go into the chute, we have one that ALWAYS seems to go first, then the rest follow.

Oh, my skin is thicker than that. I won't let someone run me off with their comments. He wasn't being rude or mean to me just stating his opinion I guess. I just would not want my son to get a rude or mean reply saying he was dumb for asking a question....that might make my "motherly" madness show....
