Huge relief!!!! Noticed Crash a little away from the herd in early Dec and she was limping on her right hind foot. Didn't see any signs of foot rot, an abscess, stifle or hoof issues. Gave her Banamine Transdermal for the pain - and also to ger her closer to where I could bring her down to the barn. I'll be darned, but she was with the herd later that day and seemed perfectly fine but kept an eye on her. 12 days later . . . yikes!!!! She was at the bale but there was an obscene amount of blood & pus running down her leg and her udder had burst in the middle, between her two right quarters. Vet said her right quarters were blind and it was most likely caused by an injury (when she injured her leg/foot) because her calf had been weaned over 2 months. Slight temp of 103 & he gave her Excenel & Banamine Transdermal. Okay, then. She raised twins a couple years ago and should still be able to raise a nice calf with only 2 quarters.
Three weeks later, imagine my horror when I once again found her calmly munching at the bale with yet more blood & pus running down her leg. Seriously?!? Another blow-out?!? Got her to the barn, called the vet, and this time I flushed and treated her with Tomorrow mastitis infusions in what was hopefully her only 2 good quarters and Draxxin KP. And now, the waiting game. Did I save them? Or was I going to have a bottle calf?
Woohoo!!!! Nice, big heifer born this morning and she's nursing like a champ on the 2 teats I managed to save. But I wasn't convinced, just seeing the calf suck. So, I was able to get up close & personal while the calf was nosing around and got a couple really nice squirts of milk out of each teat. Cautiously optimistic the calf is good to go, but will watch her like a hawk for the next few days.
