raised a bull calf to 2+ yrs. old..he has good numbers and always looked great, best of the crop...bred him to cows which are starting to calf...i am very dissapointed in in the calves...this is sure a let down after 3 yrs of anticipating...

That is disappointing xbred. Any chance we could see pics of bull and calves? Of course I have no room to ask that since I have no idea how to post pics.
 
What is it about the calves you are disappointed with? Sometimes its hard to tell for a month or 3 what they are going to do
 
Well what kind of bull? on what king of cows?

I do know what you mean, I have 3 years and $3,000 wrapped up in a embryo bull that I HOPE his offspring will be in demand when taken to the breeder sales, So I know what you mean pins and needles, I have seen his calves from the cows I ran him with last year now I am waiting to see the results this fall and winter with regards to weights, conformity, and such.
 
char bull..on char cows and xbred cattle..so far 6 calves..on char cows no depth..on x bred cows..fine bone small calves...one xbred steer is barely ok...i blame it on low birth weight epd, but i'm jsut grasping at straws...as far as calves looking better later on..i've seen few if any bad ones turn good, but several good ones turn bad...

Ah, the latest fad in breeding cattle, stack low BW upon low BW and get some dinks..... :D

We kept a 3/4 SH bull last year, next spring we'll see if the big daddy let him get a ride on any cows and see what we get... I can't say he he'd win any shows, but he's not bad either... next year will tell... I know that since I've gotten used to a gelbvieh butt, his calves may not be what I like anymore
 
I put down my best bull ever this year in terms of muscular development, rate of gain on grass, disposition, feet/legs, etc - definitely hoping he throws like calves. No guarantees though.

Great example was GAR Integrity. He was the highest performance bull to ever run through the Gardiner program - all systems pointed to "go" on him. He sold 1/2 interest to Sunny Valley farms for $255,000. He was a dud. That's gotta leave a mark!

Wow! I had not heard that about Integrity! Could you go into more detail about his being a dud? PM me if you would prefer.

Hey Doc - not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but . . . .

He's probably 10-15 years old now I guess. Everyone had high hopes based on his performance in the GAR prep program (literally the all time leading performer they'd had to date) - figured he'd become an AI star like a lot of the other Gardiner bulls. But his calves didn't perform. His EPDs were quite "poor" in relation to other bulls - at least Gardiner bulls - and he quickly began seeing only limited use - certainly Gardiner wasn't using him. Eventually, the only folks you saw using him were the folks at Sunny Valley and semen value was near nothing - some of the cheapest on the market. In the end he was NHC so that put the nail in the coffin so to speak. His daughters were nice, smaller framed girls that were generally decent animals - but he never rang the bell with anyone on anything and certainly never spawned any next generation ai sires.

No, I am not being sarcastic! I was serious. I knew that he was found to be NHC, which of course, is a real no-no, but I wasn't aware of the other factors which you mentioned.

Thank you for the update. Unless you have your nose to the wheel on most factors all of the time, you miss some of the critical points. I missed those points on Integrity!

he sold a lot of semen BECAUSE he sold for $255k, I was told he'd paid his way in semen sales within 1 year. As for 'great' AI sires, they're just hawking the next fix all, latest-greatest. Yes he was NHC (which came out a short while after SVF dispersed). Yes his EPDs tanked, but a good friend of mine (who is a real cattleman and breeder not just a numbers jockey like so many who claim the title of breeder) has an extraordinarily consistent breeding Integrity son, and I'll bet there's more out there with folks whose lives aren't ruled by a piece of paper....
