Not the head bolts. The block itself separated just above the crankshaft. Crank, bottom 1/2 of the block, con rods and cam all stayed in the engine compartment. Pistons stayed in the top part of the block with heads still on. What you see in the pic at the end, is the top 1/2 of the engine and are looking up into the cylinder bores from the bottom side.
