Dehorning question.

Dad asked me something this morning that he noticed when he was busy doing some dehorning last night. I honestly didn't know the answer, though we made a guess, but I'm still unsure about it.

He had a RWF calf that he was dehorning in the squeeze and noticed that the tip (I think he meant the outer layer) of the calf's horn got chipped/broken off from something (don't know) and there was just the core left out in the open. Anyway he left it alone 'cause he didn't want to cause anymore pain to the animal than he already has, and trimmed the other horn off, but asked me this morning if that little bit of core left might just dry up and fall off. He said it might (and he'll probably asnwer his own question); I wondered if the horn might grow back (my guess). But he doubted it. Btw, calf is around seven or eight months old now.

So now I'm turning to you folks on here and asking you the same questions, figuring you might have some answers/guesses? :?: Thanks.

I've seen them continue to grow more times than I've seen them stop growing usually not enough of the horn forming tissue around the horn comes with the outside shell.

Okay, so the horn tissue WILL grow back, even at that age.

The "cap" off won't stop the horn growth. You have to cut the growth ring off. That's why you are supposed to cut part of the scull - not just the part sticking out.
Same with dehorning with an electric dehorner. You are putting the "burn" on the growth ring.
It will grow if left - IMO.
