Last weekend I bought a new Shopvac that was on sale at Lowe's. Through my negligence I had it standing too close to the heater when I started warming up the shop. Melted half of the top and a huge hole in the side of the tank. My old Shopvac had quit working so I needed one. Went to Lowe's, told them what I had done and asked if they were still on sale. Nope, sale ended Sunday. The manager said to bring it back and tell them it was defective and had burned up. Told him I don;t do crap like that and I would just buy another at full price. He grabbed one, put it in a cart and hauled it up front and told the cashier to charge me the price for when they had been on sale. I don;t know if it's just the management of our local store, but I've found them to be really easy to work with and more than willing to bend over backwards to be of help. I hated the place when they first opened, but a cople of times I've called a specific department and told them exactly what I wanted and had it waiting for me at the front of the store at will call.

Yup, good business! Keep a customer, encourage positive word of mouth and eat a little profit. Great manager and I would be a loyal customer and spread the word. For lowes it means new customers and a loyal repeat customer, the manager knows they are dealing with a item that may be marked up 500 to 1000%.

We put all new wood floors in our house. Bruce brand. About 30% of the wood was unusable. Bought it at Home Depot.

The Home Depot manager made it all right. Actually gave me cash to make up for how much it slowed down my installer. I am a fan for life.

I think they are scared to death of getting bad press in Yelp, Fakebook and all the user driven reviews and new media.

Lowes vs The Home Depot..........
They each are scared of losing market share to the other one.
The bare mention of THD to a Lowes manager will usually get you the absolute best deal they can make you--and vice versa.
(My wife used to work at THD)

I was found a gate latch that I needed at lowes. No barcode and it was in a mis marked bin, the manager told me that I could just have it for nothing since they could never find a price for it. They have got a lot more of my business since then.

I would rather have a tobacco stick broke across my neck, than set foot in ours. Funny how location can make such a difference.

This impressed me quite a bit earlier this week over at THD....

Our lowes does a nice job of hiring "mature" department managers and personnel that have actually worked in the trade before. Our plumbing department has 3 master plumbers working there. Makes it nice when you need help with a part and you can talk to somebody that knows what they're talking about.

How refreshing. Makes me want to buy stock in the company every time I go in our Lowe's.

Sounds like you've got a good store there that tries to help out its customers. Ours is ok to deal with, but alot of times it seems like they are understaffed and it's hard to locate someone in the department you need. If they have what I am needing, I usually go to Ace Hardware. Some stuff costs a little more than Lowe's, but there is always someone around to help if needed, and I can be in and out in the time it would take me just to get inside of Lowe's. Kind of how I prefer going to Dollar General over superstores like Walmart if I can help it.

If you know exactly what you are looking for and have an idea of the general vicinity that it is located in, then it isn't too bad in there.
The problem comes when you need assistance, then its the luck of the draw. Some employees are helpful or at least try to be, then others seem like they wouldn't care if it snowed in July.

Seldom go in either Lowes or Home Depot but when I do it's usually HD because it's a little closer. Over the many years I've never really had anything to complain about product or service wise.

Around here THD is hit and miss.. they do have decent staff, but the selection isn't as great as they make it out to be.. they really have everything and then some... except for what you want.

We had a Rona, they weren't any good either, and I think they got bought out by Lowes...
Home hardware is a cooperative, and we've had VERY good luck with them

Had a good experience last night with Lowes. Bought a chest freezer that was on sale and brought it home. Buying it was quick and easy. Get home, opened box and one bottom corner was bashed in. Wife was worried they would think we did it and would have trouble since I refused delivery. Called the store, they offered to give me extra 10% off or bring it back no hassle, no big deal. We decided to bring it back because there was a wave inside of plastic liner. Got there, they recognized me and asked what I wanted to do. Couple minutes later had a new one coming from the back, unloaded old, loaded new and home I went. Easy as pie. It did suck the first freezer was damaged, but I am so glad they handled it quick and professional.

I bought one of those workmates to use as a shooting bench. Hard to order it since it isn;t a regular stock item. Got the call that it had come in, went to get it and when they brought it out the box was torn. Looking through the tear I couldn;t see any damage. Manager told the cashier to knock 10 bucks off the price. And said if it was damaged to just bring it back. It's fine, no damage, but customer service like that gets me going back.
Back when I had the gun shop my accountant asked how I managed to increase my business by 50% each year. I told him it was simple, good customer service. I even had the sporting goods clerks at walmart refer people to me.

customer service works with most too keep them coming back but I see more and more of the dickheads want something for nothing or constantly bytching that xyz has it cheaper. I ask them why they were here instead of xyz and their reply is your CS is better but I want their price. I offer to match the competitors price as well as their customer service and it usually shuts them up.

My biggest gripe about the big box stores is if someone who worked there just had the guts to say, "I don't know.", when they didn't really know. gs
