Friday when we hauled all those Corr cows down to the Kudzu place, I brought back 5 weaned calves to sell to Clay's boss, and brought back 3of their their mommas too. I had them sold to a dude that lives about 30 miles north of me...no use in him driving 180 miles to pick them up. I put them in my arena where we had Gail til Clay got his hay baled, fertilizer put out, and we got a rain ( Got one yesterday), This dude was supposed to get them Saturday morning, but called and said something came up, and asked if he could get them Tuesday ( today). He asked for my VENMO, and went ahead and paid for them right then. So, about 6:30 this morning I went over there, hooked up my 16' stock trailer to carry Gail and her calf back to Clay's pasture. I saddled up and herded those 3 into the holding pen for the roping chute, and waited on Dude to get there. He pulled up at the time he said he would and he was pulling a 2-horse bumper pull trailer! The dividers were out, and he had cut the saddle compartment out of the front. This was cheap trailer with the 2 half doors and butt chains. I said " Man. you can't haul them in that...they will jump out". He said: " I haul cows in it all the time. No, they won't jump out. Thanks for your opinion, but I didn't ask, and I know what I am doing. So, let's get them loaded and I will be on my way". I said " Man, I am already hooked to my trailer. Let's load them on it, and I will carry them to your place, and you can just give me some gas money " He said: " No they will be just fine on my trailer, This ain't my first rodeo". So, I told him to back up to the corner, and I undid a perimeter panel and used it to shut the return lane opening and had him back up to it. I walked the filly up behind them, took them down the return lane and they hopped on the trailer with out breaking stride. He shut the 2 doors behind them, waved at me, jumped in his truck and took off. He got about 30-40 feet when they all 3 jumped flat-footed over the doors. They just stood where they landed, eating the grass around the outside of the arena. He got almost to the end of the driveway way before he saw them in his mirror, I guess.

Dude slams on his brakes, jumps out and goes to yelling and cussing, hollering at me: "What are we gonna do? Reckon you can get them up and back in the pen with that nag you are on"? And various other choice words.. cussing up a storm. Lucky for him my old lady or grandkids weren't with me! I had to count to ten...quite a few times, then I said: " Well, don't know about you, but I am about to put this nag up, load that Jersey and carry her to a pasture. But you, on the other hand, have some loose cows that could get in the road. I suggest you get them up, go get a cattle trailer, and get them out of here!" He said: " You mean you can't round them up and herd them back in that pen? And yes, I will give you $25 for gas to load them on yours and take them to my place!! " I just laughed, and started riding back to my stable. He hollered: " Really? You aren't going to help me?" I told him that yeah, I catch cattle for people with my nags. $300 per head is what I usually get. He said: "WTH? Are you nuts?!!" I was already riding up behind them, and they just walked on into the arena. I said: "I am going to unsaddle my nag, go in the office , get on my computer and return that $2250 to your Venmo..minus 10% for my time wasted today. Then you won't have to worry about getting them up and hauled to your place, Hoss!!" ( Dude hadn't asked for a bill of sale, so I hadn't given him one). He got all apologetic then. Told me he would pay me 10% more, another $225, if I would please load them up and haul them for him. I said: " Make it $250, and you pay me before I load them and you have a deal! " He must have took a Xanax or something on the way to his place, When we got there, he was nice as he could be...kept on and on saying how sorry he was. Wanted to know how many I was weaning at the end of this month, and said he'd take ever how many there were. I said: "I think about 15 or so, maybe 20, but they will be $1k, delivered!" He said : " Well I will call you at the end of the month". I think I already have them sold to some one else, though. I can't stand an a$$hole! The idiot had a 16' bumper pull stock and a 16' rag top GN there at his place!

That trailer description made me check to see if mine was still around.

as this is a 10 month old post so do not think i am hijacking anything.

had conversations with warren about corriente, all black calves, etc.
this last year i separated a bunch of older cows, corriente and red angus. left the angus bulls with them and added a braford bull. the red angus cows had always had black calves from the black angus bulls.

this year about half of the calf crop is all black and a few black-whiteface from hereford cows, so i know their sires.

another group is all red calves. the red angus which always had black calves (from the same black angus bulls) are now having red calves. the black corriente cows are having red calves, so far sans horns. had a single multi-colored corriente also had a red calf, no horns.

all the red calves have to be from the braford bull with hereford half being dominant. so far am enjoying all the red calves. intending to keep a dozen or more red heifers and see what they produce in a couple years.

just random thoughts.

Yes, red is a recessive gene. A red cow and a red bull can have nothing but red calves. If your black cows are homo for black, they gonna have black calves by that red bull. If they are hetero for black, they could have either a red or a black calf.

This 'simplifies' the explanation of how dominant and recessive genes behave. This is probably the most common way traits (black vs red) can be thought of and occur, but by no means the only way and genetics gets WAY more complicated from here, but Punnett squares go a long way in explaining gene interaction. One gene a time in the squares is the simplest. I have commonly done 2 genes and 3 many times. I've done 4 a few but those are at the point of betting 'unruly'. More are possible but its verry messy from that point on to the point of being nearly impossible to comprehend the diagram once you get so far out. At that point, you need to understand the math and take a pass on drawing it out.

Combine this with the fact that all traits are not equally observable, if at all. Horned/polled is probably the easiest. Color quickly becomes difficult because there are dominant, co-dominant, dilutors, and recessive colors. Probably more. Then add in the subjectivity of observation, is it solid red or is it diluted red? Is it white or a cream colored dilutor? Is that one small white patch evidence of co-dominant white? Are there more than one gene expression that carry the same color as we see it? It's fascinating, to me anyway.

True dat. White Shorthorns are homozygous for the roaning gene. There are some SH bulls that you'd swear were red... but they're genetically roan... if you look closely enough, you may find just a few white hairs here and there.
In the Holstein breed, there are 'wild-color' (it's present in Angus, too, but discriminated against to the point that I think they're disqualified), red-black(aka Telstar red; calves start out red but turn black as they age), and, back in the 90s, a Dominant Red/Black-carrier gene mutation showed up in a particular family line of Holsteins - the Dominant Red/BC color is dominant to black. .
If you kick Longhorns & Brahman breeds into the mix, it gets even muddier. It's been a while since I read through it, but this outfit has a 5-part series on TX LH color/pattern genetics: http://doublehelixranch.com/colorPart1.html
