Had a cow up and die on me this weekend. She was just fine and then she died Saturday morning????? We think maybe she got into poisonous plants? It had nothing to do w/ calving as she had a 4 month old calf. Not blackleg. Only 10 in good healthand condition.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss, it's never easy and I think it's worse for a smaller cattle person. I think we spend more time around all of our cattle than a large operation does.

I think that is so true. It's not necessarily that you get "attached" to the cattle...it's just that you get to know them and their quirks and characteristics when there's not so many...and if you lose one, you beat yourself up trying to figure out what you might have missed.

a post mortum from a vet would be well worth the money if you can....when you have a smaller operation each one is a real loss to you. maybe a post could tell you if there is something that could get other cows so you can remove it....
 
southeast usa......hummm....tis the season for milk poisoning, especially during dry times in the fall, I cant remember the plant thats does it but it's pretty quick, with little or no symptoms before death...........also..buckeye trees are dropping those infernal nuts right now, and they to are poison to your cattle.

When you found her did you examine the body? Gunshot wound? Foaming at mouth? How old was she? Is your pasture weed free if not what's there? Could have been noxious weeds? Barbed wire piece?

No gunshot. No foaming. She was 10 in great condition w/ a nice May bull at side. No that pasture was not weed free. But it's mostly pigweed and ragweed.

It hurts but, we've got the calf and no one else has croaked on us so who knows. Our theory is some kind of plant. Acorns?

The issue of pigweed being poisonous I think needs a lot more study to see just how serious it may be. When it starts to wilt our cows think it's a salad bare and will eat it to the ground. In it's younger growth stages they eat the leaves and leave the stalk. Last year we baled a field of solid pigweed that was 5-6 feet tall. I just wanted to get it off the field and planned on burning it. A neighbor had a bunch of eroded ditches on his place and hauled the bales over and dumped them in the ditches. His cows cleaned the stuff up to the last little bit with no ill affects. They still had plenty of decent grass, but preferred the pigweed.
With all of that anecdotal esperience, I wonder just how toxic it really is. I persoanlly wouldn;t feed the stuff by choice and I try to eliminate it at much as possible, but it still makes me curious.

Anaplasmosis - We have had a couple of cows come down with it and die pretty quickly.
