How many people do you actually think want to fix their own anything? They want their vehicle to have all the creature comforts of home, while they cruise from home to work to the store while they scroll Tik Tok and ask AI questions. Most people don't own tools and have no desire too.

The percent of the population that would want some dinosaur vehicle with no electronics (fuel injection, backup cameras, etc) is really quite small. Heck most people specifically option their vehicle with MORE fancy tech options than comes standard.

If you want a tractor with no electronics then good for you. Me and lots of other farmers will take ours with a comfy AC'd cab, power shift transmission, shuttle shift, fingertip hydraulic controls, etc (all fancy black magic electronic technology) so that after 10 hours in the seat I don't feel like I went 10 rounds with Mike Tyson.
I imagine there are a lot of people that would. Do you know for a fact just as many people hadn’t rather have the option to buy equipment without all of that stuff ? How do you know it’s a small part of the population that had rather all of those opinions if they had a choice. Do you or can you post any polls or proof that it’s only a small percentage of the people.

I raked and bailed hay for 14 hours yesterday day in a tractor that had AC. I never used it. Working 10 hours plus has never been nothing to me. I am not no panty waste by no means.

You bet I had whole lot rather spend my money on something I can work on when it breaks down myself.

Honestly I'd expect my dealer to diagnose and repair the newer one quicker as that is what their young guys are trained on. The 30yo is Greek to them.

Parts availability is a concern in the future just as it currently is with older equipment.
What I see is in a lot of instances the business that sell high tech products regardless of what it is don’t always have people that can fix it simply because it’s way over there head.

Like you said yourself. Everyone can choose for themselves. But it’s getting to you have no choice but buy equipment loaded with technology. And as long as I can avoid it. That’s what I do. I am not a billionaire but I could go out in the morning and buy a couple new John Deere and all the implements needed to go with them and pay cash for them. Or new trucks etc…., But I am content with what I have.

No studies, but in my tiny rural town there's 2 auto mechanic shops and I know them both well. And the amount of people that pay them to change wiper blades, light bulbs, batteries, rotate tires, brakes, etc tells me the vast majority just want to drive and not think twice about the vehicle.

I was in tractor for 10 hours today with the AC blasting with a full powershift/reverser so I never once touched the clutch pedal, auto steer engage (so i could surf the internet) and it was pleasant as can be. I'm not such a tuff guy though, life's to short to make myself suffer. It's nice to get home and pickup my kids and not be covered in stinky sweat and hay dust. Or be like my father in law with a fake knee because he spent his entire life with his left leg working a clutch pedal. To each their own.

Agree that the government has contributed to (maybe caused) many of these issues. But, I also think that the manufacturers have an obligation to have adequate service people and support available to diagnose and fix the problems related to these newer machines and technology. I think they have not met the goal there. Similar to new car and truck dealers. They should have the most competent and trained service people. Seems like they struggle to correctly diagnose and repair.

No doubt that you are a talented mechanic. If you take your equipment to the dealer for repair, would you expect they would be a quick or as accurate to diagnose and repair as yourself?
And they will ALWAYS struggle to correctly diagnose and repair the stuff at dealerships. Simply because there isn’t ever going to be a dealership that will be able to hire enough people that are skilled and qualified to provide a service to repair such high tech vehicles and equipment.

Name brand doesn’t mean much anymore. It’s more about the latest technology that comes down the pike.

😂😂😂😁😁😁 WOW WEEEEE !!!! 😂 never had to touch that clutch pedddllle !!!! lol and poor old father in law is crippled from pushing that danged old clutch ? 😂

I don’t know how on earth I have managed to survive all these years other than I guess I grew up during a time when men were men. I prefer a clutch my self. Have two 5.9 Cummins diesels that I specifically had to go to different dealerships in order to find them over an automatic. 😂

Now most of the people that know me will be the first ones to tell you they don’t referr to me as sweet thing or sugar britches !!!! 😂😂😂 But I am kind of proud of that part.

Well tell me you have posted some pretty impressive pictures of the climate as far as snow and the elements you work in. Is there a lot of technology out to help handle working in that too to make life easier. I am still living old school when it comes to that. I come inside when the weather’s bad. 😂

If you come inside when the weather's bad then you would spend half your life inside here. Since I farm for a living I have to work anyday of the week no matter the weather.

Must be nice to go inside when the weather is inclement. :ROFLMAO:

Some of the conversations here are pretty extreme. Farming with an 8N or horses is way out there. Holding a gun to someone's head and forcing them to buy. Pretty extreme. Realistically, buyers have to choose from what is available. I think the issue is not what is best or most comfortable. I think the issue is reliability. Comfort and tech can be great if it is affordable and reliable. A guy that is trying to get hay baled or a crop harvested needs reliable equipment more than comfort. Hard to feel proud of his fancy equipment if it is in limp mode and he does not have the resources or support to get it repaired quickly.
What equipment is more reliable? A tractor with a mechanical injection pump and minimum electrical and technology or a fancy new one with screens, busses, sensors and automotive harnesses and connectors? No doubt which one will do more and do it better when everything is working. But when the codes are coding and the sensors are sending and the canbuss won't buss, that old tractor from the 80's might be judged to be more reliable. My opinion is that technology and functions have outrun reliability. Certainly have outrun the owner's ability to diagnose and operate
I agree whole heartedly with everything you said. But I will add that I think that all technology new and old should be available for people to choose for themselves which works best for them.

I see a lot of good in some of the new technology and also same with the old technology. But in my opinion when it comes to marketing technology it leans towards new technologies even if they have to only offer their new mouse traps to sell them by not giving consumers the option to buy other proven types of technology like merchandise that is loaded with their technology they peddle.

Or maybe you didn't log the hours that fulltime farmers and loggers put in. My father in law was a logger for over 45 years running a dry clutch skidder. He estimates he's got 60-70k hours behind them over the years. Stopping/starting/hooking logs/unhooking/fwd/reverse all day. That much clutch time will surely wear your body out.

But surely you know are an expert and know more than him and his doctors and surgeons. Haha

It is even a bird has a little bitty brain but it knows to fly South for the winter !!!!! You have a choice just like that bird or any living being to choose to live in a climate like you do which hey ? That’s fine with me. I don’t care where you live and wouldn’t matter if I did.

Same way with your opinion on all of this technology. If that’s what you like I am tickled titty pink for you. Like I said I get along just fine with out new technology. I grew up learning how to do simple math like times tables addition, subtraction without the need for a calculator. As a matter of fact they wouldn’t allow you to use a calculator until we started learning a little trigonometry in high school.

Move south? If I ever moved it would be farther north the more cold the better. Keeps most of the unwanteds away. Winter is the best season of the year.

Sit in the hvac'd cab and I can't tell you if it's 30 below or 100 above it's always the same temp inside. Haha

Big deal !!! I worked construction for a lot of years as an iorn worker. I feel pretty confident I could easily done what your father-in-law done. I thought you said your father-in-law hurt his little knee smashing in that old stiff clutch ?
Tell me about your hard life’s experiences. Or do you have to refer to others to have something to bost about ?

I guess you are maybe a scientist seeing how you know how well and great this new technology works and is so much better. But tell me about the good stuff. Because mashing in on a clutch peddle reallllly doesn’t seem like all of that much of a deal to me.

Your just one tuff fella. Someday when I grow up I hope I'm half as tuff as you. You seem to have tons of experience so you must be right about everything. Have a good one.

No, I hadn't seen that. Thanks for posting. I looked up the company online... https://www.tricrobotics.com/

Mostly effective against bugs (mites), mold and mildew, and "germs" (the micro-organisms they refer to). NOT a "herbicide" (plant killing) technology, although I'm not sure what the "overexposure" stated below would do... so perhaps its "possible"??? And so the above image is a little misleading. Targeted at high value vegetable cash crops like strawberries, etc., so I assume it's a pretty expensive treatment currently... but of course, with widespread adoption, mass production, and competition that could change. And with that it could potentially become available to less valuable/acre row crops.

According to AI:

Limitations

UV-C is most effective against fungal pathogens and surface-dwelling microbes. It is not a universal solution for all insect pests, weeds, or crop diseases bestfolkmedicine.com. Overexposure can damage crops, so treatments are carefully calibrated.

In any case, it's still a "non-selective, broad spectrum" type of control. The "See and Spray" technology they have now is more of a "spot-sprayer" type of mechanism, using a broad-spectrum herbicide, but not spraying everything. That has some potential I think... also not cheap, and highly technical and mechanical (lots of electronics and solenoids that all have to operate perfectly and reliably to be reasonably effective). As soon as one of those components fails to respond, the whole unit is out of commission for "proper" operation. And then there are "laser weeders" that zap individual plants using similar("light") technology. https://carbonrobotics.com/ Again, mostly currently targeted at high dollar vegetable type crops... and again, I assume because of cost.

Well no not really I am by no means a tuff fella and as a matter of a fact probably in the worst shape I have ever been in my life. And a 6 year old kid could probably whip the living day lights out of me. And my worst enemy is probably myself. I tend to let my alligator mouth over load my humming bird ass all of the time.

And believe me when I say I hope you don’t grow up to be nothing at all like me I sincerely mean that. Tuff you say ? Well I don’t claim to be tuff at all but I don’t run from a fight nor will I. I rather be dead than do that. I stand my ground just like I think most anyone would do.

As far as experience goes. I am just like you or anyone else. I by no means know everything and just have my opinions like everyone else. I am open minded and choose for myself like you or anyone else dose as to what they do or don’t think is good or bad. To me if I want to know something about say a place on the other side of the world and I can ask somebody that has lived in that place all of there life and is known to be truthful and honest say maybe a priest of someone of that status. I personally would count on his experience and advice over someone that has lived next door to me like I have that has never been there but has only read about it like I could have done myself.

So when it comes to integrating technology with certain things it should be taken into consideration more than the way it’s being done. In my humble opinion. And regardless of what my, your or anyone else’s opinions are. They are just that opinions and right or wrong. We are all entitled to them here in the U.S.

I have read a lot of your post and I am not being sarcastic when I say I am very impressed with your skills and knowledge of both your farming skills. Not everyone could manage near as well as you seem to be doing just because of the climate in your part of the world. I tip my hat to all of the farmers that thrive as well as they do where winters are long and their growing seasons are short. They have to be not only tuff as boot leather but as smart as a IBM computer with very little room for mistakes.

But anymore with global climate change all of that holds true just about any where around the world. And all farmers has their own problems they have to deal with when it comes to mother nature’s curves it sends their way.

The "innovative" part is that they've basically mounted bug zappers and a vacuum onto an autonomous, GPS guided dedicated use tractor to attract, zap, and suck up bugs, and to kill mold/mildew, as it goes through the rows. It's that autonomous tractor part that's the largest part of the innovation. The rest is all "broadcast application" basically. And it's kind of cool that it's intended to operate at night (attracts the bugs much better that way, and I'll assume that there's some potential that the target pathogens are more sensitive to the UV-C light when there's "less ambient light" available (they're pupils are open wider, in a sense). Cool technology... I'll give them that.

All of these kinds of things focus their efforts on eliminating the pest... without considering the WHY of the "pest" being a problem in the first place.

All of the major tractor manufacturers offer a tractor with very few electronics. John Deere has the E Series, Case/New Holland the A series, and Kubota has the S series. These tractors are really nice and have computers on them but the computers don't controll allot. Emmision systems are here to stay and something that we just have to deal with.

Our Kubota M9960 is 14 or 15 yrs old now and hasn't had any issues yet. It does have 3 computers. First is an Engine control, Second is the Dash Controller that gives any info needed, third is the body controller. The last one doesn't really control much at all but sends inputs to the dash and ecu. I know it's got 3 computers because they all got smoked when the tractor got struck by lightning. It was a 6k fix to replace all 3 computers. Get above the base model on tractors and things get complicated quick though.
