Danged Fleas !!!!

It seems that the wild barn cats have givven my barn a bad case of the tiny black fleas. What can I do to get rid of the fleas?

Here is what I am doing -

1) I am in the process of riding the barn of the cats. I should have them gone in the next couple of days.
2) I have begun a spraying of the barn dirt floor every 5 days with 1.25 lbs of 80% Sevin mixed in 25 gallons of water and sprayed on the dirt floor of the barn.

By spraying the barn with the sevin I kill the adult fleas and should eventually break the cycle of new fleas. The seving only kills the adult fleas but does not kill the one in the egg stage.

For those of you who have had this problem, what did you do to get control of the problem?

I would really like to buy something that has residual affect and will kill the fleas as they hatch out.

Any ideas?

I do have my Private applicators License so I can buy stuff the is not available to the general public over the counter.

Recently had the same problem due to some "wild" cats. Once I got the cats moved, I began spraying a mix of Pounce and Lorsban. Sprayed every 4 or 5 days for three weeks. Seems they are gone.

I went through it with some bottle babies. Tried everything. Couldn't find a flea collar big enough. :lol2: The calves finally got big enough to turn out. Problem solved.
Cats are not the only animal in the barn that bring in fleas. Mice, rats, and even birds will also bring them in.
I wonder if poor on fly repellent would help. I will try and remember to look up the active ingredient on both and get back with you.

You have got to spray for 3 weeks to kill all of them. If you don't do this, they will be back.

We use permethern. (probably spelled that wrong)

Once you get rid of the cats give the entire barn a good layer of diatomaceous earth. Throw it on the walls and everwhere else that the fleas could be or might want to jump. If you have dogs rub some in the dog's hair as well. Does a good job.

I have had good results spraying 1oz 10% permethrin and 1oz Insect growth regulator mixed in 1 gallon water. The Insect growth regulator stops the eggs from hatching. I get it at the feed store. Good Luck.

"Termidor" works great on ticks and fleas and has the residual effects needed.

I had fleas in the back of my pickup , carpet floor. I noticed I wouldvery quietly take a hot cup of coffee and place it on the carpet.
Nothing much happened , but when I banged the tray fleas would suddenly appear and head for the hot cup ?

Seems the eggs hatch on vibration. Bloody clever buggers. I used flyspray as it was only a small area but the spray did not stop the eggs only the live ones.

Very clever experiment as well. Doubt the fleas stand a chance.

If you have osage oranges gather them up and throw them out where the fleas are they will leave or die. There is something in them they do not like.

I have heard the same thing about black walnut leafs.

For those of you who have had this problem, what did you do to get control of the problem?

I used Precor and Pyrethrin. Sprayed once, then again in 2 weeks and the problem was solved. The Pyrethrin kills the adults, and the Precor interrupts their life cycle and prevents the newly hatched eggs from attaining adulthood. Only adult fleas can bite, and without a blood meal they die. The Precor has a residual of apprx 3 months, but I can't remember if the Pyrethrin has a residual or not.

Borax powder will kill the fleas and the eggs. Dust it through out the barn. Same stuff used for laundry. Works great, lasts a long time.
