At the moment I dont have a set routine as such. I'm bringing the show team in about once a fortnight at the moment, primarily to break in the three new heifers. Routine on those days goes something like this:
9am Feed and brush bulls (no tying up)
10am Go out to the other property, get the weaners in for a feed. Cut out the two older heifers and put in seperate yard.
10.30am Bring in the cow and calf, the older heifer and the baby heifer (hopefully without her mum!)
11am have all females tied low. Give them all a feed (they are not on regular feed, just free choice hay but when I work them they get a bit of chaff and stud mix to settle them)
11.30am Drag the three heifers around that havent broken yet.
1 or 2pm Brush all heifers and tie up high
2.30pm Work three unbroken heifers again
3.30pm Let heifers go back into paddocks.
4pm Go back to first property. Tie up, brush and weigh bulls.
Around 5.30ish it is dark, so home time.
When I was doing show cattle full time a few years ago, it was generally something like this:
Feed and clean out pens in morning (1/2 an hour)
Tie steers high in pens (if broken) for around 1/2 an hour. Brush them while tied high.
Tie steers down until afternoon, with access to feed ad lib.
In afternoon, tie steers high again for 1/2 an hour. Brush again.
Let steers go in pens, and top up feed.
Each steer would get washed twice a week, so I had for example 4 or 5 steers allocated to each day of the week.
They would all get turned out one day a week into a paddock.
I would also have one or two days of leading practice once they were broken in (obviously more while I am breaking them).
Routine at shows is usually:
4am Drag myself out of my warm swag and down to the cattle. Pull the cattle off the beds onto a tie rail. Clean beds. Spot wash them if necessary. If the show rules allow it, I feed in the morning on the tie rails, primarily to keep the beds clean. They get a bucket of chaff with one scoop of stud mix and a drink of water (1 bucket for heifers, steers n young bulls, 2 for cows, unlimited for senior bulls). Put out hay onto the beds, then bring them back in onto the beds.
7am Breakfast
8am onwards Whatever happens to be going on that day, be it weighing and scanning, judging, or not much at all.
12 noon Lunchtime for cattle. Biscuit of hay each (two for seniors) and water.
1pm or 2pm Lunch for me
5pm Dinnertime for the cattle. Chaff and stud mix, water, then hay.
6.30pm ish. Exercise time. Take all the cattle out for a good walk.
8pm Dinner for me.
10pm Hay and water.
