Hooked up to a scraper that has not been used for several years.The cylinder shaft was pitted on 2 of the cylinders due to being exposed to the weather. Now i usally try to park equipment with all the cylinders closed. But some equip this is just not possible. I was wondering what ya'll do in a case like this? Do you coat the exposed shafts with some kind of lube, and if so what do you use?

Good cylinders are chrome plated. As chrome is very had it will take years for it to wear out. As far as rust is concerned if there is any little pore or scratch rut is sure to follow.
To answer your question, grease would probably help. An equipment shed would be better.
If the cylinder already has rust you can smooth with steel wool. Vary little leakage will occur but the seals will wear faster.

If your cylinder shaft is rusty it is showing wear or mis- use. Coat with grease or cosmoline. Steel wool or 2000 grit sand paper and be prepared to rechrome and new packing and seals.

Make sure you smooth off the rust before retracting the ram or you're sure to cut the seals.

And for future reference, ZEP makes a product called "Iron Clad". It's a spray that is much like cosmoline.

Thanks everyone for the usefull info.
I hadent used that old scraper for about 2 years and it's probably near as old as i am. It's one of those things you remind yourself to do when you aint busy and it keeps getting put back on the back burner until forgotten. Then you walk by it again and you make another mental note to oil the cylinders,then to the back burner it goes again.
I seem to have a bunch of those back burner deals.
If I think of something needs done I need to do it right now or it's forgotton. Also if i'm going to the barn to do something i need to keep going and do it. cause if I stop for something i get sidetracked. Guess maby i'm loosing it.

It is just a part of getting older and having too much to do. Only difference is now it is easier to side track me.

That's true too......or things are done half a..s and you're still happy with it.
