curculating heaters

I had a 500 watt curculating heater on the tractor .it worked good only too small I could hear it curculating---changed to 1500 watt i dont think its curculating very good any ideas' why not ?

Are you talking about a tank heater that mounts external from the engine? The heater has to be mounted up right with the inlet at the bottom. It has to have the inlet lower than the lowest part of the water jacket in the block(I use the block drain plug). The outlet that goes back to the head or water manifold has to have an upward flow all the way to the connection. So if the outlet hose goes up and over the engine and comes back down to connect it won't work. It'll just heat what coolant is in the pipe and keep it hot but not circulate.

If it isn't a tank type just ignore this post. 8)

Carl, did you bleed the air out of the system? When you hook it up, hook the inlet up first and wait until antifreeze comes out the outlet before hooking up the outlet. Also make sure you don't have the inlet/outlets reversed (don't take this personal. My Dad's been around circulating heaters all his life and had installed the last one backwards while working in a dreamworld).

so what would make it be curculating fine and then just quit

when its working real good ---is it pretty hot or just real warm

I should be able to hear it circulate ---shouldn't I?????

the bottom of the heater is below the outlet about 2 inches

Is the heater thermostatically controlled? It may be cutting in and out by design, and since I suspect this is on your 930, you likely won't want that, especially if you routed the hoses the way I mentioned in the 930 thread.

If its not thermostatically controlled, remember the noise comes from cold coolant hitting a hot element, and with the poor circulation through the 930, its not going to be all that noisy unless you've just plugged it in. I have the exact same heater on my 1130 Massey as I have on my 930 Case, and the Case is very quiet whereas the Massey sounds like you're boiling a hundred pots.

A sure way to tell if it is heating well enough is that you'll need a little breath of ether to get the old girl fired up in -35C weather, even if its been plugged in all night.

By the way, if anyone gives you grief over that 930, I've got steady proof that those old tractors are tough to beat. My 1130 quit on me a few days ago and I needed to finish feeding. It was -25C or so and the 930 hadn't been used since September. I tossed the battery charger on the cold battery, gave her a healthy snort of ether, and she fired right up.
