Just made the decision to cull a bull calf :( . Turned 9 months old and just isn't going to make it. He had potential early on with some issues but I thought he might make a decent bull for somebodies commercial herd but I decided to not take chances and go ahead and cut him. He was out of an Atlas heifer and I like that blood line. My registered heifers have all looked great but the few registered bull calves that I have had have not been what I am looking for. They are still better than 75% of the bull calves other breeders in the area keep and sell but not good enough for my taste. Got some more dropping soon so maybe a keeper out of those :)
 
In my vocabulary a cull is an animal that is not up to my expectations. It can mean a cow that is too old and declining or has foot, disposition, milking, mothering or any other type of physical issue that keeps her from performing up to my expectation...........it also means a bull calf that was originally kept as a potential breeder that is no longer deemed acceptable for that purpose hence I am culling him from my herd of registered cattle. He will get cut and then sold as a steer at the local auction. My goal is to sell the best cattle that I have the ability to raise. I can't get there by compromising. I guess everybody has a slight different take on the definition but that is mine.

If you kept the culls thinking you could make them better, would that be cull-tivating them?

Hoss there are people out there who try to pass off junk as breeding stock, it's good to hear a cattleman that is willing to stick to his standards and only sell what he deems quality bulls. It is so much easier to maintain a repeat customer base if customers know a guy only offers quality.

I agree with your definition of a cull animal. Lots of reasons to cull we go through several cuts along the way for both bulls and heifers. Sometimes it is really painful but necessary.

Where around us can I find decent/good younger 2nd calf cows to replace some of my older cows. Most of the sales I have been to lately have all just been someone else's culls that are also getting older and not breeding back like they want to. I can't find anything around here for under 1900. Need 4-5 good ones. That would cull my older ones out. Thanks.

That is a tall order mach. I would try David Bryan at Warren County Livestock. If anybody would have some or know somebody it would be David. You can google him to get his number or I can pm you with it tomorrow.

A cull is whatever the definition of cull is to the person that owns the cattle . 99% of my culls would be a godsend to a lot of cattle people . It takes hard work and dedication to be able to cull hard when you start out . :tiphat:

I figured you were making a joke so I made a lame attempt as well.

And HD is right. A cull from some herds is a leap forward to some others. The cull scale varies widely.
Hard cullers make good herds. No matter what " colors" your cows are.
