cull cows

That is the about the same price that they are selling at Winnipeg Livestock as well !

Sure glad that I do not have any to get rid off this fall ! :(

You have to start getting rid of the junk in July, Carl. Topped Winnipeg on July 28th @ 32 cents with this girl.

Even up to mid-September is ok. Then it goes in the toilet.

I've got 4 old cows around here that really should go. I know they're bred, so they may get to lounge around in a pen all their own and be fed some oats to get some shape on them before calving. No way I'm going to give some packer a 10 cent cow that they'll make 3 buck hamburger from. I'd rather pack oats to them all winter.

BSE. We can't sell anything above 30 months (some countries 20 months) outside the Canadian border. We've had a captive market situation since our first BSE case, and it shows no signs of letting up.

Good fat cows here were up to 35 cents on Friday. They ranged from 28-35cents on the younger cows in good condition, and pretty much anything old, thin or that had anything at all wrong with it were under 20 cents. There were a lot that didn't make 10 cents. We have a few, but it will be another month before they go. If they are old or thin or have any other major problems you may as well shoot them and have a BSE test done at least you get $75 out of them, and don't have to pay the auction costs on them ;-)

What really torques me off is that I had a 2 yr fat heifer that wouldn't catch go through the ring a month ago and she only brought 35 cents. Live at the packers, she was worth 75 cents, rail a buck 40, but because the big packers won't allow small shipments anymore, I was stuck running through the ring. I wish I'd been at the sale. I would have nosaled her, and sent her to a small outfit like Natura when they started accepting more animals.
