Crazy Question... No worries I am playing nice..

Ok so I have a few Char angus cattle that are smoke colored and I have had a few different bulls on the cow blk angus or sim angus is what shes bred too now. Every calf from the last 4 years is really light smoke colored. Does char carry a super dominant gene that will not allow the calves to be black? I got one due within a month I believe and am curious to see what happens now since she is bred to the Sim-Angus bull not the Blk Angus. Once calf is born I will post a pic.

It is called the Diluter gene. It dilutes the color black to a smokey grey. And yes----I am serious.

WE HAD A COUPLE OF ORANGISH HEREFORD CROSS COWS.....sorry about the caps key....that were of unknown heritage...they were out of Hereford looking cows but we do not know if the sire was Charolais or Simmental or what.....

when they were bred to registered angus bulls we had we got calves of every description....solid black, smokes, black with white face, smoke with white face and one that was almost white.....

BINGO, and it only needs it from one parent to show. If she is homo for it all of her calves will be diluted

I like the cow and you can tell the calves are char ang crosses but I get beat up at the sale barn. this is number 4 calf and was hoping maybe something would change. Thanks everyone for the explanation I have been scratching my head wondering why in the world do they keep coming out light smoked.

I'm surprised. Over the years, a few of the ones I've had out-sold my black calves, and the others did just as well as my black or BWF calves. The one exception was a heifer calf from last year and I don't know why other than maybe because it was heifer.

I typically sell if I only have 1 or 2 to sell at Blackstone and when I got a load I go to Lynchburg. Lynchburg and Winchester by far are the best salebarns price wise.

Generally, black is a dominant color gene, but the diluter gene will dominate over the black------so to speak.

This sim angus bull is throwing some nice calves but I think the sim portion is coming out more so in other calves cause those calves are darn near straight brown.

Yea I hope so but either way I like them brown or black.

Now we know why you are getting those smokey calves...you're using the wrong 'jeans' :P
