can anybody help, we were talking about the olden days watching the beverly hillbillys and we could not remember the name of the banker. Here in australia we catch yabbies in our dams i can recall jed clampet talking about crawdads are these fresh water lobster? How do you keep them alive in a bucket for a day or so until you get around to cooking them .Half of them are dead a few hours after we catch them.

To keep them alive they need to be packed in a mesh sack and iced down if the weather is warm. Definitely don't eat the dead ones..
 
When I was a kid, I would catch them, and call them pets. Of course they don't act like pets, but they would eat and stay alive. They need an area that they can get out of the water. In deep water like in a bucket, they will drown. I kept them in a container that had water on one end and rocks on the other. They would eat hamburger meat or pieces of raw beef. I don't know how you would go about feeding many. I imagine there is a site on raising crawdads or crayfish on the internet since they sell them in stores. http://www.anapsid.org/crayfish.html
I see their chimneys in areas where there is no water. They build a stack about 8" tall and 3" across.

Keep in mind that Crayfish in Australia are big salt water lobsters without claws. Here in the US, Crayfish is just another name for Crawdads......

Speaking of crawdads, in my hometown the Knights of Columbus have a big all you can eat affair in early May with cajun boiled crawfish, fried catfish, corn on the cob, slaw, mucho cerveza, zydeco bands, etc. I usually think my belly's going to burst by the end of the night. But I guess our little one-day festival is nothing compared to the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival which is also in May this year. Any of you guys or gals going to that one?

Those Australian Crayfish are purdy dern good eatin' too!
 
I have played around in our freshwater spring before and caught crawdads. I would catch them then put them in a minnow trap and then drop them back in the spring and they would last for days.

Damned things. They dig around our spring and now it runs around the catch basin instead of in it. That spring is supposed to feed the house. :mad: :mad:
I wouldn't think of eating them...YUCK :shock:

I won't eat them either Cert and Bull Lady.

When I was a kid, Caustic used to hold me down and let them snap their pinchers on my nose. Then he would hold on to me for what seemed like eternity till I screamed loud enough that good ol' Brutis (the family dog) would come and grab them in his mouth and run to the barn and eat them. :cry: :cry: :cry: just one of many horrible childhood experences...
