How can people keep their cows among all that junk like that. Drives me crazy seeing that mess

Slick those are dairy calves. They always go thru that ugly a$$ stage. They'll grow out of it (maybe). Those longhorn/corriente rascals have a long way to go before the become freezer "beef". Looks like they might be eating bread or some sort of bun.
 
That's a new stage to me cause I don't remember any of Granddad's stuff looking like that. Also, I'm trying to figure out where that grass came from. Nothing like that around here yet.
 
I agree. It is days old bread. You can buy it very cheaply from the bread outlet stores. Those poor critters look like worn out roping steers.

Ahh--I'd forgotten all about that. 'Cheap', yes but hard to find from what I hear around here. My dad used to feed it some back in the 80s and he had to get on a ag list of some sort and they limit how much you can buy. And it's not 'day old'--it's quite a few days old at the Mrs Bairds outlet in Cleveland. He had to buy whatever was in the full rack--bread, buns, tortillas, sweet rolls. He complained mightily about getting a rack that was mostly flour tortillas, and those cows squirted and poohed like a goose about an hour after he'd feed 'em.

Yeah, mine are a long way from the best cows in the world, but those are some pretty poor cattle. I see a lot of that kind of thing on local craigslist tho. Junkyard cows.

actually for freezer beef yes. but for a team roper no.. if i were still roping, love to have em.. you'd have to own a feed mill to put weight on them.. and they may be burned out and he's ready for a fresh pen of roping stock. and knows he will be gang raped at the stockyard...
 
Sometimes when I see pics like this I just wanna go by the cattle myself just to take them away from that owner. Only problem is I have no where to put them.

Need a sarcasm font - some folks might think you were serious.
One of my neighbours got such poor calves I won't let my calves access that boundary fence. Even the worst of them don't look like that. I think the calves in the latest photo I posted at ranchers would be about a month older than the one in slick's pic.

doubt the ones in the first pic's. would look much better after you did... it aint in their makeup to fatten up, like regular beef breed .... they actually aint in that bad of condition

Rego I was 100% serious. Those jersey/holstein crosses often look jus tlike that and pic. The longhorn/corriente look pretty much like the ones in the pic. Now your calves may look better than the dairy calves shown... I don't know...but given a chance they will grow out of this "ugly duckling" appearance.
 
Yep, they're ALL cute and nice looking at newborn, but right afterwards, get all gangly and awkward looking as their bodies and legs don't grow at the same uniform rate. Everything catches up eventually tho (most of the time).

I have a long legged dog that was the same way. Good looking little puppy, then for about the next 8 months, his legs were way too long for the rest of him, he looked way short in body length and he couldn't go 10 steps without getting tangled up in himself. That sucker can run down anything now tho--and do it all day long.

These calves look like they have coccidiosis-if so, death is near if untreated-they pretty much just waste away
