Cows love common crabgrass better than any other type of grass during the summer time.

I've never tried it, although I've been tempted. As I recall, there's a guy out of Oklahoma named Dalrymple that sells the seed it and I think the Noble Foundation in Oklahoma either sells it or has extensively studied it. Apparently it is a very high quality forage for warm/hot weather parts of the country, high protein and digestability. And it will essentially perform like a perennial if it is allowed to re-seed in late summer, but of course that requires grazing mgmt. since the cows are so fond of it and would otherwise graze it continuously. Maybe some of our Oklahoma members can shed some real light on the subject.

I tried some of the redriver crabgrass a few years. Bought it from the guy that Ziffle talked about. He was very helpful. I think if your are willing to break up the ground and do some spraying you might be sucessful. As for me I wanted to put in areas that were torn up badly from feeding round bales. I got a pretty good stand but then the bahai that is now the dominate grass in my area seemed to take over. Good luck. If you want the number for R.L. let me know I got it around here somewhere

i have some crabgrass, and i wish i could get rid of the stuff. maybe red river is a different kind?? anyway.. what i have does not withstand heat and drought very well.

We put in 10 acres last year with Lespedeza as a kicker. The intention is to use it as a warm season graze. Came on like gangbusters July/Aug which is what we wanted. Put a group of 6 yearling bulls on it Aug 1 and they gained about 2.5 lb / day average for the month we had them on there. I'm sure part of that was the Lez. This year should be the real test.
My impression so far is that it's going to do the job but requires a little more hands on management than some other pastures. We're trying to run it in conjunction w/ rye to give some late fall/early spring graze during the dormant period of the RRCG. Having a heck of a lot more trouble with the rye than with the crabgrass!
