Cows Bawling

I have a question for you guys and gals. Here lately when I go to check on my girls, they bawl like crazy and follow me everywhere I go. I treat them with cubes usually on Sundays and Wednesdays. They have plenty of free choice hay, minerals, a Crystalix tub, and they act like they are starving to death. This is my first winter with cows. Is this behavior just normal for this time of year when they don't have green grass?

most likely since you've been feedin cubes, they are just talkin to ya, mine do that ever time I pull in the gate, as we are puttin out hay every other day and cubes on the off days.
Enjoy it, I love to hear happy cows talkin to me. :D

Kind of like healthy kids. Feed 'em a good, nutritious supper, but they always have room for ice cream and pie. No worries.

My cows do the same. They relate you with the guy who brings them those tasty treats every so often. I also enjoy it. I can get a close look at them any day of the week.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't figure it was really anything to worry about. Just being overly cautious I guess. I like that they come to see me and talk to me! :D I sure do get a kick out of watching the calves wrestle with each other also.

dueling calves are a hoot. dueling cows are a different story..Watch out!!!

They are probably begging but make sure all the necessities are covered. Are they losing weight? If so they may actually be needing more feed. Do they have lots of water? How are their mineral/salt blocks?

I had this one steer who liked carrots. Sometimes he'd follow me home to my front gate, and just wait there....I knew what he wanted. I'd give him a carrot...he'd eat it and go away! I just took that guy to the stockyard yesterday.....I miss him. Lesson: It's no good to make pets out of the ones you're not gonna keep forever! (Although I don't miss this 600 lb. guy stepping on my feet! I think I have a broken toe!)

All you folks with the talking cows, if they are constantly mooing at you when do you know they actually have a problem?

I know this is a strange question but really want to know. I have Brahmans and they only moo occasionally, they will moo in response to me calling them if they are not in view. Also they will moo if there is a problem. There are different moos for different situations but they don't moo just to hear themselves make noise.

So how do you know when a moo means something?

Late? Mine stand up at the gate a half hour early just to make sure I don't forget! Got one who will stand at the fence by the window so she can see me in the house!

..and I really do think they know what day of the week it is....I feed range meal every night, but give them cubes on Sundays and Wednesdays, and every Sunday and Wednesday, they won't go straight for the range meal, but will stand there and holler at me for the cubes....don't do it any other day of the week, just Wednesdays and Sundays. I thought it was maybe that I was doing something different that they noticed, so I've been experimenting...and nope, they know that on Wednesdays and Sundays, they get the good stuff......spoiled rotten is what they are.... :P

As for knowing the difference between a "somethin wrong" moo and a "bringin me somethin to eat" moo. Mine don't moo at me durin the spring summer fall, when we aren't feedin hay and cubes. Unless of course I honk the horn and surprise em with a treat. If you spend time with your cows you learn the difference. I have one old cow, that you'd think she was bellerin and dyin when we feed. I think she's the "announcer" she moos, fast and short...moo moo moo moo moo and won't stop till the hay's put out and in her mouth.
The only time I've ever noticed a "somethin wrong" moo is when a cow has lost a calf and ya know which one that is cuz she's walkin back and forth to the spot where the calf is.

Our cows will moo when we bring them food, but they aren't overly bad at it. They know I am going to feed them when I honk and they'll moo. When I don't honk, they still come to see me when I go into the pasture, but they are quiet. I think they are afraid I am holding back on them.

The "cubes" moo is definately different from the "something is wrong" moo. Especially when you sell off the mama cows' calves. The mothers will bawl all day and night. It really is a sad sound. Thing is, these calves are pretty much full grown. I guess they are mothers for a long time.

She's my leader and if there is something wrong she will meet me on the road give me her "Follow Me" moo (yes I sadly do know the difference in her moos) and take me to where the problem is. Of course sometimes what she thinks is a problem I don't. Once she alerted me to a sick calf (not her own) and I was rather happy to own her. Then there was the time that she needed to show me a dead bird... :roll:
We've only had a few really talkative cows. My mother feeds the cows 2 days a week and this one cow would always come and talk to me about it the next day. I never knew if she was telling me that Mom did everything wrong or if she was telling me to go away so because she liked my mother better. :lol:

about the dead bird. usually if there is something dead one bawls and they all bawl gathering around it...
i've never had one come moo at me and then lead me to a dead bird. maybe a dead calf if it was hers and i made my calf moo and followed her.
