I wasn't sure where to put this so here goes. I bale graze sorghum Sudan and cover crops in the winter. I monitor cow needs by body condition and manure structure. When needed I supplement with licks tubs. This has two problems. One is cost, I pay $60 for a 200 lb. 28% all natural protein tub. Which is a high cost supplement for protein. The other problem is the colder the weather the less the tubs are used. Someone mentioned that cold weather makes the tub surface less available and I have noticed that when the temp went down to minus 20 degrees F the tubs were hardly used. I do however like the convenience of not starting a tractor in winter and merely putting out tubs periodically. I have read about people using salt in a feed to supplement cattle but limit intake. Anyone have any experience? Cows? What mix did you use? Pros? Cons? Advise? The idea of putting a self limiting feed in my old tubs every couple weeks does sound nice and a savings in feed cost.
